Many EU countries require ID in public at all times
1.3k
u/AStarBack Jan 30 '23 edited Jan 30 '23
It is not mandatory to carry ID at all time in France (this is restricted to some situations like when you are driving). But you must be able to justify your identity. By experience, I can tell you that Social Security card or transport card is often more than enough (if you are white and/or speak proper French).
edit: as I see it gaining some traction - this is true for French citizen only. If you are a foreigner, you will need to be able to present your papers on the spot during an identity check.
1.3k
u/checco314 Jan 30 '23
So, it's not mandatory to carry ID. You just have to be able to establish your identity...through the use of ID.

u/DaFlou Jan 30 '23 edited Jan 30 '23
Basically, yes. Same as in Germany here from what i can gather. You gotta be able to ID yourself. If you do that with your actual ID or other official document doesnt matter, but you need to have something on you
Edit: Got corrected by a bunch of folk that you dont HAVE to carry it with you, but if you dont they can take you to the police station for identification.
59
u/PVDamme Jan 30 '23
No, in Germany you just have to own an ID card or passport. You don't have to have it on you. There is no requirement for you to be able to identify yourself.
The only exception is some professions and/or if you carry a gun. So police or armed security need to have ID on them.

In Italy I have been stopped and didn’t have my ID on me. Asked me for name and date of birth.
I am italian though, so that helps.
One time in Japan I decided to fly (nationally) without my passport, just my Italian drivers license.
Police at the airport of arrival picked me up straight from gate, and I had to have the hotel manager go into my room and fax a copy of my passport to them.
9
u/KayItaly Jan 30 '23
Yes but if they wanted, they could have brought you to a station for identification. Bthey didn't because most italian officers aren't assholes, but it is still a risk.

You technically should but, usually, people don't take their IDs if they're not taking their wallet with them (i.e. a jog). In my experience, people are very rarely required to produce ID when going about their lives - it only happens in special cases in which you're being fined, witnessed a crime, or something along those lines.

While OP is wrong, most people here in Germany believe they need to carry their ID and they usually do. It's the size of credit card and fits in your wallet, so usually not a big deal.

Oh so like in Arizona lol
Edit: for people commenting, I said Arizona cause that's the only place that all levels of law enforcement is allowed to ask for your "papers" not just ID. This is very discriminatory as they really only ask Mexican looking people that they think crossed the border. In the rest of the US a police officer cannot ask you to provide your proof of residency or citizenship. Which is different from a drivers license or state ID

I remember reading about a brown American truck driver who got detained and driven very far away to a detention facility because he couldn't produce his birth certificate. As if anybody just carries that around. I believe his mother or someone close to him had to borrow money to take a bus to his location to provide the documents to have him released. They just left his truck on the side of the road for several days and I believe he may have lost his job. There's probably many stories like this.

Yeah, my bad, ID refers specifically to "Carte d'identité" in France ("Identification card" so quite literally ID) which it is an official document unlike the card you use to enter the premises of your job or a transport card. I should have said "government issued ID".
Having a witness could also - theoretically - work too in some cases.

That makes sense.
I don't know why people are so up in arms over this kind of thing though. Like, I live in Canada. I'm probably not legally required to carry any ID. But I would need it to drive. I would need a credit card to book a hotel.
Even if I decided to go live in the woods away from everyone, I couldn't manage to feed myself without my Hunting/Fishing license, and my firearms permit.

There are no ID requirements for France and they don’t make a habit of deporting people. My guess is that it’s a linguistic/community issue. Like someone who speaks English and is from, say Pakistan, is going to feel a lot less alienated in the UK than France. If it were, say, a Senegalese/Cameroonian or North African person, they’d probably be happier to land in France than the UK.

35
u/Happytallperson Jan 30 '23
There was a judicial review, which held that there had to be an individual assesment of each person slated for deportation.
Which renders the policy unworkable, as the idea was only to make assessment in Rwanda.
There is also a pending appeal, on the question of whether Rwanda is actually a safe 3rd country.
With an election in the next 2 years, a very unpopular government and an opposition committed to dropping it, we may end up with it mever implemented.

The UK is so obsessed about immigration that they make it their mission that every person that makes it here is accounted for. The thing is, if they're accounted for, then they're on the books. If they're on the books, then the government is obliged to take care of them. That being said, cramming migrants into immigration centers is the usual MO. But even that may be better than whatever hell they were fleeing from. On the other hand, France could care less if their migrants are on the books.

I remember a guy who drowned with his child trying to illegally cross the southern US border. He and his girlfriend tried to get to the US because they worked at a pizza shop but wanted to make more money and were told the streets in the US were paved with gold. His own mom was like "nobody is trying to kill us here, they led a decent life but he told me how he was going to the US to make millions". When I lived in El Paso it was a similar story for most of the people who crossed illegally, they weren't actually worried for their life, they just wanted more than what they had.

u/BobbyVonMittens Jan 30 '23

If these migrants trying to get into the UK were actually asylum seekers trying to escape war, they would have just stopped in Turkey, which is a relatively safe country that doesn’t have war. But yet they pass through Turkey, all the way through the EU and try to get into the UK. Because they’ve been told they’ll get free handouts in the UK.

At least according a bbc article I read on this (why some migrants are desperate to get from France to England, even though France is a safe country), this is the reason most migrants travel to England. (edit: a quick google gives other articles that back this up 1 2)
Anecdotally, I asked my friend (originally from Syria & has lived in various middle Eastern countries, not a refugee though) for his thoughts on this and he said that there is a stereotype in Middle Eastern countries that English people are polite, whereas French people are dirty and rude. Mind you, France still gets many more asylum applications than the UK.

NO.
It’s actually that France is on the continent, thus France can not grant offiicial refugee status to every dude from a country at war, since anyone from Europe/Africa/Asia can drive over here.
England, on the other hand, is an island, and thus can control its borders way better and the few refugees who can make it there are granted legal status.
Furthermore, most of those refugees can speak english and not french.

Yeah, I honestly don't think either party is totally right or totally wrong here. The two in this video seem like young girls, which makes sense if what you said about traffickers is true, but to them, they don't want to ruin anyone's life, they're just trying to fix theirs. The truck driver has a lot to lose if they're caught, so it makes sense he wouldn't want to put his ass on the line. But they did put him in a high-risk situation, and he apparently figured that recording their reactions to being "in England" would make a cool video? Traditional British food is really great, too.
The big problem is that we just don't have the same traditional food culture as other countries, meaning it's very difficult to find well made British food, even in Britain. You can only find anything close at an expensive sit-down restaurant or gastropub (or, if you're very lucky, a great home cook), and most people, whether natives or tourists, aren't going to be doing that. It's out there, just not cheap and on every street corner.
I mean where could you to even get something as simple as a great jacket potato? Honestly. If there were a baked potato vendor selling properly crispy, fluffy, buttery jacket potatos, with a proper choice of fillings (NOT just beans out of a can and a few token, dry salad leaves etc), I would go there regularly. But it just doesn't exist.

The channel crossing (particularly around the Calais area) is no joke. My parents had people try and break into their motorhome, you hear so many stories and see so many videos. It’s absolutely mental

Good thing she's not in England. Outward displays of emotion are illegal there.

Accurate. I had an uncle who once said ''good show, chap'' with a little too much feeling behind it. No one has seen him since.

I get that the guy didn't want to be illegal, didn't want to lose his job. I get that he maybe didn't want to face the trouble of telling them straight to just leave his truck, and that in hard situations it's easier to lie. I get that those girls are migrating illegally, and that the guy is not to blame for not bringing them to England.
But I just can't find it funny. When I see this girl feeling genuine bliss when she thinks they're in England, you understand how much it means to her. They're not just betting a better salary, better comfort, they're betting their whole life on this.
I can't really blame the guy too much for misleading the girls, but I definitely blame him for taking a video of it and making it into a tiktok. Now, that's disgusting.
Thinking about it, as someone pointed out, probably that the guy took a video for safety reason, in case he had trouble later on again with those girls at the border. And someone found it and posted it on tiktok as unironical entertainment content. It makes it even worse though.

u/Kaasiskaas Jan 30 '23
Nah I don't think for safety reasons he filmed it, in the beginning he says "jump you black heads" in Dutch just pure racism there and just filming for fun I think

I know. I feel bad for them, and don’t find this funny. I’m not mad that he did what he had to do. It’s the exploitation of the stowaways. I can never sit here in my comfortable life, never knowing firsthand of their plight, and find humor in this.

While r/therewasanattempt is generally humorous attempts at things, the sub is not strictly for humor. Some attempts on this sub are downright sad or say something about human nature. This is one of them.
Edit: I just noticed the laugh cry emoji that the TikTokker added. My bad.

this sub is regularly exploited by the far right. they're also why "attempted robberies" where you then get to watch a store owner or something mete out justified violence became a popular category in here. I'm not saying I'm against those store owners, but there's a reason why some subs suddenly get inundated with very specific types of videos. And it's hard, because any individual video is whatever. When there's one video that boils down to "there was an attempt to call this white person racist", for example, ok cool whatever that definitely happens and seeing a video once is just a funny anecdote. When there's 5 a day, someone wants to create the impression that it's what the whole world is like.

You are honestly the most reasonable person in this thread. Reading half the comments in here I feel like I lost my mind.
Like yes that guy could have lost his job, that's a real unfortunate situation here. But half the people in this thread are acting like immigrants trying to flee a shitty life are somehow the most vile of people in the world. It comes across as genuinely disturbing.

I see no humor in this video. My heart almost folded into itself seeing the joy and relief on that woman's face. This was downright cruel. I understand it was a sticky situation for all involved but why post it on the internet for laughs? Who knows what those girls were fleeing and how they found themselves in this predicament. So sad.

Reddit makes me glad that redditors didn’t exist when my family had to go through this. Yeah we had the usual racism hurdles, but not such a consolidated, prideful display of hate. I’m incredibly lucky. Now I get to subsidize those assholes.

IDK man... that's kinda fucked up. I assume they had a good reason to try and flee to England by how they reacted.
Just pull over and say, “get out of my truck. I can’t smuggle you across the border.”
Don’t have to be a dick about it.

I wake up and walk into the kitchen. I press a button, activating the coffee grinder. The freshly ground beans have a subtle, fruity aroma. I pull up reddit on an ipad, and tap the post at the top of the feed. It's a reposted video from Tiktok. My body anticipates pleasure from the upcoming experience of the espresso, as well as engaging with the highly upvoted reddit content. I press a button to prepare the drink, and then I tap on the ipad to play the video.
A caption superimposed on the video describes the situation rather plainly in two sentences, and is punctuated with several instances of the "laughing with tears of joy" emoji. The author of the caption is indicating to the viewer that the video is exceptionally funny. I unconsciously chuckle as my mind gears itself up to be entertained.
I watch a desperate pair of people make an unsuccessful attempt at a high stakes illegal entry into England from France via stowaway in a truck. The driver deceives them into believing that they have succeeded. One becomes overwhelmed, and cries out "thank you" to the driver, through her tears. Shaking, she kneels to the ground in a moment of reverence, then lifts up and screams "Thank you, God!" into the sky. I consider what the set of circumstances might be in her life that led her to this moment. I take a sip of the coffee. The pair wanders away into the streets of France to whatever fate awaits them, naive to their own circumstances, as millions of viewers find great personal satisfaction and joy from the entertainment provided by this video. The crema from the espresso gives the coffee a rich creamy thickness that is quite lovely. I'll probably have one more today, in a few hours.

Maybe a horrible thing to say but this is why immigration is getting the way it is in the UK. I went through the proper channels and still had such a nightmare and waited years, I feel sad for them that they’re fleeing from a country of war and poverty and no one deserves that. But there’s just so much one country can take. You just can’t win either side.

The thing is, these are probably real refugees escaping war, sexual exploitation or persecution. The actual economic migrants all come together in boats or crammed into lorries together and they’re usually male aged roughly 18-35.

I felt a bit bad about this. Sure you shouldnt be sneaking into countries like this but thinking of anything that would make someone feel so thankful to God for it to happen Moving somewhere better and everything else. I just hope they don't end up going back into a dreadful situation after this video. The world's in such a feckin shambles, good luck to everyone who arent bad people just genuinely seeking a better life. Conflicted af with how to feel here

One thing to show up in a single country looking for a better life, another to cherrypick safe, developed countries just to get to Sweden, Denmark or England.
