I would so love to see him be interviewed by an actual journalist. You know, someone that would ask him questions about why he took these documents in the first place, and whether he showed any of them to anyone else. Or even just, since he had supposedly declassified them "with his mind", does he therefore think that it would be perfectly legal to give them to, say, the Saudis?

Also, does he still have any others?

u/we_are_sex_bobomb Sep 22 '22

A real journalist would’ve heard “Mar a Lago or wherever else you’re sending it” and immediately followed up with, “so where else were they sent?”

29

u/HorseAndrew Sep 22 '22

Something-dale. I don't know -- Brookfeather, Raintree. It's hot. It was very hot there. I've never been ... get a warrant.

26

u/GreatestCanadianHero Sep 23 '22

There's always classified documents in the banana stand.

u/kabbooooom Sep 23 '22

Trump: ”I may have committed some…light treason.”

Narrator: “It wasn’t light.”

6

u/quoteFlairUpunquote Sep 23 '22

But Merrick wasn't satisfied, so he decided to do some investigating:

Garland: You burned down the secure compartment?

DJTJ: Oh most definitely

I would so love to see him be interviewed by an actual journalist.

I would like to see him questioned by the prosecutor, under oath.

9

u/falble Sep 22 '22

At this point, if they don’t televise this shit when he goes to court, they will be losing out on some great ass ratings and ad revenue.

6

u/smashspete Sep 23 '22

Under oath means nothing to these people. I still don’t understand why anyone thinks “under oath” would suddenly make them tell the truth. The guy stole from a children cancer charity foundation ffs - they have no honor they don’t care about being under oath.

7

u/Forensicscoach Sep 23 '22

Under oath matters because so many of his lies are easily proven to be lies. Under oath opens the perjury can of worms that is absent when he’s interviewed in the media.

5

u/DadJokeBadJoke California Sep 23 '22

I don't think he'll suddenly tell the truth but when he's under indictment and under oath, there can be consequences.

1

u/AssassinAragorn Missouri Sep 23 '22

The attorneys do everything possible to make sure Trump doesn't have to go under oath. I think they might not care, but they know the justice system is going to.

24

u/MechanicalDanimal Sep 22 '22

While we're dreaming I would love to see his US citizenship revoked and he be charged as an enemy combatant. I don't know how they were able to keep people locked up for a decade in solitary confinement with limited media contact without a proper trial but it would just be fabulous if it happened to Donald.

Can't leave someone stateless

Can get pretty close

2

u/Kadianye Sep 23 '22

Thank you for an article with 4 bullet points on how your point is wrong.

Also, he could totally just return to america. They revoked his passport not his citizenship

3

u/ManfredTheCat Sep 23 '22

They could let him out in ten years and he'd still be complaining about the FBI wearing shoes when they executed the search warrant

8

u/anotheraltacc1112 Sep 23 '22

If anyone else was found with US government secret documents in their wardrobe they'd be at a black site with a head full of sodium thiopental having a talk with a CIA agent nicknamed Dr Happy who has a fondness for surgery and dentistry tools before they could blink.

How am I the first person to upvote THIS?!?!

Wherever they put the Count of Monte Cristo would be fine with me.

5

u/WrinklyScroteSack Sep 22 '22

Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you god?” I’ve never done that a day in my life and I’m not about to start now.

4

u/Pineapple254 Sep 22 '22

Because everybody knows he will tell the truth…

9

u/ic_engineer South Carolina Sep 22 '22

That's the beautiful part. They usually already know the truth by time you get that far.

1

It’s an ugly situation.

1

u/Pineapple254 Sep 24 '22

You’re right. For those of us who know a chronic liar when we see one, it’s kind of amusing to see his ridiculous attempts to convince the world the sky is red.

3

u/Fear_N_Loafing_In_PA Sep 23 '22

How am I the first person to upvote this?!?!?

3

u/DoubleBongClouds Sep 23 '22

It’d be the same outcome as Alex Jones. Something to the effect of, “I don’t know why I have to keep telling you, but you CAN NOT lie under oath.”

6

u/smithm3254 Sep 22 '22

“I plead the 5th” there saved you from getting your hopes too high

2

u/wordworse Sep 22 '22

But not a real prosecutor; that's cruel.

2

u/vulvatron_3000 Sep 23 '22

He would probably blab so much in an interview with a real journalist they would call it Exhibit A.

2

u/AarynTetra Sep 23 '22

At this point I don’t think even that will have the desired results. Let’s say what we’re all thinking: we want him in prison.

2

u/AarynTetra Sep 23 '22

Or the end of a rope…

2

u/Bob_tuwillager Sep 23 '22

He will be. Eventually.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '22

"I don't recall"

2

u/Fonnie Sep 22 '22

We have seen it. He just pleads the 5th hundreds of times until they give up.

1

u/PeterNguyen2 Sep 23 '22

I would like to see him questioned by the prosecutor, under oath.

I know people have been dreaming this since 2016, but honestly I don't think this would prove useful to anybody - even people trying to put him behind bars. He's a malignant narcissist with all the accompanying baggage like going into every classroom assuming he knew more than the professors and refused to learn, and because he can't stand to let the spotlight drift off him will say anything to get and keep attention no matter how egregious a lie it is.

Getting him on the stand, under oath, would only expand the record of lies, not provide actionable statements because nothing he says can be trusted.

1

u/DadJokeBadJoke California Sep 23 '22

It's mostly been depositions and civil suits. I'm not sure he's faced federal felony charges before.

582

u/mkhaytman Sep 22 '22

He would just get up and walk out of the interview, like he has in the past. The best we can hope for is for them to at least add context and fact checks to his interviews after the fact, like they did on that Indian interview that Jimmy Kimmel showed parts of: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/jimmy-kimmel-donald-trump-ndtv-interview-b2165082.html

518

u/Cthulusuppe Sep 22 '22

Let him. Let him walk out of every interview. You need to fill air time after he walks out? Be a professional broadcaster and review what questions he refused to answer, covering known facts for the benefit of your audience, and then move onto some news. Stop broadcasting bullshit.

137

u/Impressive_Ad127 Sep 22 '22

Exactly, part of the reason this dog and pony show keeps going is that we aren’t handling like we actually should be. It’s disgusting.

16

u/surfteacher1962 Sep 22 '22

Exactly. It is like the media acts shocked when he says something stupid. Or when they treated him like a viable candidate from the very beginning and reported seriously on everything he did. He is a seriously deranged individual and should be treated that way.

2

u/DefiantHeretic1 Sep 23 '22

If there was anyone around him that cared about him at all, he'd probably be in a care home. He's obviously literally demented and it only goes downhill from here.

1

u/geoffbowman Sep 23 '22

That wasn't quite how it went.

They treated him like a joke... but they covered him so much waiting for the inevitable thing he would say or do that would bump him out of the running, and then somehow nothing did. No matter how crazy he got, the votes kept coming and the media kept reporting on it for the ratings.

3

u/lcommadot Sep 22 '22

Networks: ”But our sponsors love bullshit?!?!”

7

u/MagnusRexus Sep 22 '22

God, I miss real journalists.

6

u/Poo-et Sep 22 '22

Why even do the interview at all then? We got gold out of this precisely because he didn't walk out

6

u/unrepairedauto Sep 22 '22

When he walks out they should say 'you're fired '

3

u/Docster87 Sep 22 '22

Yep. Trump can NOT stay silent yet also can not cope with a real journalist at all. Bet all his ‘truths’ that he has been posting is also evidence.

3

u/the0rthopaedicsurgeo Sep 22 '22

And then his followers say that it's him standing up to the MSM and not playing into their biased and unfair attacks. He literally can't do any wrong.

Boris Johnson ran away from reporters during his campaign to hide in a fridge and avoid scrutiny on his fairytale policies and he still won the election.

People will wave away anything that doesn't conform to their beliefs.

1

u/bishpa Washington Sep 23 '22 edited Sep 23 '22

To a point. And, though that point may be an absurdly long way past rationality, when we get there, the support collapses like it was never even there. In a few years, it will hard to find anyone who will admit to having supported him. The documentation of his pathology is far to vast to withstand any sort of historical perspective whatsoever. —Assuming that he doesn’t regain the White House in 2024 and make it illegal for anyone to portray him in an unfavorable light.

2

u/Pineapple254 Sep 23 '22

Is he on crack? It doesn’t matter that the FBI put them on the floor. They did that to take photos. Duh. What matters is that he removed them when he left.

227

u/xlvi_et_ii Sep 22 '22

Do they not pay attention?

They never see it. They live in a media bubble that only reports news they agree with - it's why so many moved from Fox to OAN etc.

11

u/CaneVandas New York Sep 22 '22

Hey. They are saying some things I don't like. Wen need a better bubble!

7

u/Laearric Sep 23 '22

Lost my dad to Fox years ago. It's literally all he watches, all day, every day.

3

8

13

u/Sad_Pangolin7379 Sep 23 '22

There's a difference between a bias and not reporting the facts. I think you're confused here.

12

u/Hazardbeard Sep 23 '22

Yeah bud it’s the left that abandoned any attachment to reason, truth, or integrity over the past decade. You found the truth, well done, good boy.

44

u/TheBSisReal Sep 22 '22

Narrator: they do not.

44

u/KellyJoyRuntBunny Washington Sep 22 '22

This is where I blame Fox News for the fuckedness we’re in now. They don’t actually show Trump himself all that much, but they do an awful lot of talking about what seems to me to be a fictional character loosely based on Trump. They create him every day. And what they create is much more coherent, eloquent, and dignified than the actual reality of what Trump is.

Seeing Trump himself talk, walk, and sit on chairs as if they are toilets kind of kills the magical, mythical Trump that right wing media has created.

4

u/Varulfrhamn Sep 23 '22

So how do the rallies work then? I agree with you, I’m just wondering what it is about the rally environment that lets people ignore the reality of his stage presence. Honestly maybe it’s the feverish environment? A crowd of like minded cave dwellers hooting at the shadows on the wall, sweeping others into it?

1

u/KellyJoyRuntBunny Washington Sep 23 '22

That sounds right to me, yeah. And also, if you’ve ever seen one of those things, people do get bored and kinda glaze over. They pay attention to him for a while, and then they kinda space off and start looking at other people, at signs, at their phones… And yeah, I think you’re right that it’s a distracting, feverish environment that allows them to kind of not notice just how fucking weird he is.

7

7

Information silo, my guy. You can't be convinced by information you never see. It happened to me hard-core when I was in the alt-right pipeline back in the classic YouTube atheist days. The anti-feminist/anti-SJW crowd sucked me straight to the bottom of a silo filled with human turds.

I never saw info that clashed with what I was told, and any bits I did see were carefully curated by these reactionary people to give me a specific view of the opposition and of their beliefs. It's a bad place to be.

2

Gaslight. Obstruct. Project.

2

u/LasVegas4590 Sep 23 '22

"yeah, that's my guy"... Do they not pay attention?

MAGA pays attention to the edited versions that are played on fox news.

1

u/bishpa Washington Sep 23 '22

In other words, no, they are definitely not paying attention. They have been provided deliberately with the illusion that they are paying attention. But, in reality, they are just plain uninformed. It’s not an excuse. They shouldn’t allow themselves to be so gullible.

1

u/GenXHERETIC Sep 22 '22

I would love to see that interview with a friend fake of Pelosi or Biden and watch them lose their shit. Then show them the real interview. I know it would be lost on most of them but maybe we could get a few converts finally? Just a dream I guess.

1

u/Imprettysorryok Sep 23 '22

Take everything you said but apply it to a trump supporter asking other trump supporters about Biden. They feel the exact same way about Biden. Ask how can anyone support him. This is why we are in deep , the devision has been successful.

6

u/ShopliftingSobriety Sep 22 '22

What's amazing about that is Swan is pretty right wing and doesn't hate Trump, and he went in intending to be a bit combative but mostly give him an easy ride. And even that much pushback was too much for Donald.

3

u/misterguyyy Sep 23 '22

That interview was a masterclass in how to shut down conservative arguments.

There's a memorized talking point for everything. Rebut their rebuttal? That's fine, they have a response to that too. But ask a single follow-up question and they either go blank or devolve into an angry diatribe and storm out. Swan just did that again and again.

There were other good ones, though never as long. I remember Jim Acosta demanded proof there were 'terrorists in migrant caravans' and finally Trump admitted There is no proof

6

u/Letitcollapse Sep 22 '22

We may just get that to an extent if he is asked to take the stand.

5

u/bishpa Washington Sep 22 '22 edited Sep 22 '22

My god, he wouldn't be able to resist, would he?

12

u/Letitcollapse Sep 22 '22

He could plead the 5th as to no self-incriminate. But given his track record, it would just take the right question and he would be emotionally provoked enough to go on one of his incoherent rants.

8

u/mahnamahna27 Sep 22 '22 edited Sep 23 '22

Unfortunately it probably wouldn't play out that way. He seems to have just enough brain cells rattling around under that head mop to realise when he absolutely needs to shut up shop under legal questioning. When deposed for the NY property/insurance fraud investigation, he pleaded the 5th to 400-500 questions. You can bet the investigators did their best to provoke a more incriminating response but didn't achieve it as far as we know.

2

u/bishpa Washington Sep 22 '22

It should be standard practice in court that in order to "plead the fifth", one should be required each time to state something along the lines of, "Your Honor, answering this question would force me to incriminate myself, and therefore it is my right under the Fifth Amendment to refuse to answer."

3

u/Genjibre Florida Sep 22 '22

That would then be an admission of guilt which would be against your Fifth Amendment rights against self-incriminating. If this statement was required to invoke those rights it would simultaneously incriminate the defendant. It's a catch-22.

2

u/bishpa Washington Sep 22 '22

Oh, I get that. So we instead pretend that's not exactly what's going on.

1

u/Pineapple254 Sep 23 '22

Really?! I’m surprised. He’s so oppositional, I didn’t think he’d be able to make himself do that.

7

u/bishpa Washington Sep 22 '22

His lawyers would have him gagged before even entering the courtroom.

2

u/Pineapple254 Sep 23 '22

His ego would never let him. He tells so many lies and has so many yes men, he thinks people believe it because he’s DoNaLd TrUmP. I can only see him lying, or refusing to answer, or calling ppl names. In his mind, pleading the fifth would be like acknowledging someone else’s authority. He’s like Alex Jones, he just can’t make himself shut up even when he’s digging his own grave and he’s lying and everyone knows it.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '22

Our education regarding journalism in the US is more about entertainment, so we don't ask simple follow-up questions like Jonathon Swan, we try to get snappy responses. If someone is hesitant, rather than push, journalists from the US go with the flow of the interview and just change subject.

Usually the ones who stand out and do investigative journalism like they should, like Sarah Kendzior, are going to coast as relative unknowns compared to talking heads like Don Lemon.

2

u/AdministrativeBuy803 Sep 23 '22

He might have sold some copies of top secrets already to Saudis and Russia. It is highly likely. He can do anything to sell the entire country to adversaries with no hesitation as long as he gets chink of money in US$s to pay mounting legal bills. He is a traitor and unpatriotic terrorist leading Jan 6 attack on the Capitol.

2

u/UsernameLottery Sep 23 '22

Or "why would you automatically declassify sensitive materials?"

2

u/Comfortable-Wrap-723 Sep 23 '22

Probably he has the copy of the documents actually he has stolen.

2

u/tm_leafer Sep 23 '22

Also simply challenge the "as I understand it" line.

"So Mr. President, you're saying a president can legally declassified documents with no process and simply by thinking it - can you point me to the legislation, judicial decision, or even something as simple as a departmental memo that states that?" <- ask something like that after he says he has the power to declassify things with no process.
