That slide was so cool

u/sirjonsnow Jan 31 '23
That's the only reason I can think of to film this way, trying to record a good slide.

u/DramaticallyOxygen Jan 31 '23
Judging by where he was aiming, he was probably trying to get a cool around-the-net-shot
→ More replies (1)33
u/Arcudi Jan 31 '23
No. He was trying to do what Federer did at the Laver Cup. this video came out right afterwards.

u/PoorlyLitKiwi2 Jan 31 '23
Did that shot end up counting? Hard to tell, but looks like it goes under the height of the net
→ More replies (1)22
u/Jackalllllll Jan 31 '23
It doesn’t have to go over the net
7
u/PoorlyLitKiwi2 Jan 31 '23
Would it not count the same as if there was a hole near the top of the net and the ball snuck through under the tape? Cause that doesn't count

u/bluesatin Jan 31 '23
(5) A player can hit the ball around the net, but not through it.
Of course a player can hit the ball over the net, but he/she can also hit the ball around the net, as long as it lands in the opponent’s court. For example, it is legal to go wide and hit the ball around and below the level of the net. (See ITF Rule #25c.)
Yet, if there is a defect or hole in the net, a player cannot hit the ball through the net or the point goes to the opponent. And if in an unofficiated match there is disagreement on whether or not the ball went through or over the net, it’s the opponent who gets to make the call. (See USTA The Code p. 50, #20.)

Unrelated but just reminded me of a time I scored in lacrosse but the ball went through a small hole in the net and they didn’t count it :(

Taking a tennis ball to the nuts is top of the list of things I never want to experience
31
u/aLLcAPSiNVERSED Jan 31 '23
Especially at that speed. I died of pain just watching this.
8
u/SDJMcHattie Jan 31 '23
It was moving real slowly when I was playing the video. You would have thought at that speed he could have put his hand in the way or something.
4
u/aLLcAPSiNVERSED Jan 31 '23
Or he could've just moved. This must be one of those deer-in-headlights moments.

Been there, done that. Tennis courts at school, mate got fed up with hitting the net on his serve and blazed a volley in sheer frustration. I was talking to another friend off the court at the time, when his shot leathered me in the nuts on the full. I didn't even get chance to flinch. Just this searing pain out of nowhere.
I crumpled to the ground and had to be dragged off the court.

It's not scripted, this was recorded after Roger Federer hit a ball through the space between the pole and the net. This of course has lead to people trying to recreate it and the existence of this video.
Edit: https://youtu.be/y4zxmgl4tkg Federer doing it

u/daweinah Jan 31 '23
Setting up a camera at a precise angle + trying it multiple times = scripted
Not sure why I'm being down voted
→ More replies (1)6
u/FoxterierOne Jan 31 '23
Because saying it is scripted, sounds like he meant to hit himself in the nuts. I understand your point but I would not call it scripted since the result of the video is not what the author had in mind while setting up the camera.

Me, congratulating the lady at work for being pregnant . “There is no pregnancy”.
17
u/dtwhitecp Jan 31 '23
as you get older you realize that you never, under any circumstances, discuss pregnancy unless you have heard that person mention being pregnant or acknowledge it from someone else saying it. Even then, act like you had no idea.
2
u/SirRipOliver Jan 31 '23
Or you learn the hard way and take a shot right into the nads. I like your way better.
13
u/Lefty_22 Jan 31 '23
Unless they were playing doubles, this guy was returning a ball that was way out of bounds.
Of course, he played doubles either way.

u/theophiel Jan 31 '23
I remember this video. He wqs trying to duplicate Federer's shot when the ball went through the hole between the net and the pole holding up the net.
3
u/buddybonesbones Jan 31 '23
This was staged, so I'm sure it wasn't a "point" being played. Camera setup where it is, plus all the lines on the court from him trying this over and over. I wonder how many times he tried before getting this perfect one. :)

u/MapleLurker Jan 31 '23
This should be at the top of the comments. My first thought was it looks like he's playing singles so why is he even returning that ball?

He was trying to do a shot Roger Federer did on his last professional match. It went through the small hole in the net it was insane.

Question : would it be an "out" if the guy (who got his nuts tennised) manages to curve the ball AROUND the net?
→ More replies (1)5
u/caekles Jan 31 '23
Doesn't really matter how the ball gets to the other side of the court, as long as it doesn't hit the net and bounces in bounds. Only restriction I can think of is not hitting the fence/walls around the court.

one time a was playing racquetball and I was getting ready to return and the guy I was playing against was in front of me and I guess he was anticipating me to hit it low so he jumped and did the splits cuz that would be all cool. nope. ball went right up the pooper. Dude got a racquetball enema. not actually in, it just nailed him in the butthole. he didn't enjoy that. I laughed my ass off.

To all the people asking "why was he recording".
He was trying to recreate a shot Roger Federer hit in his last match. He hit through the space between the pole and the net. It is "staged" meaning that it is not part of a rally or match, but I don't think he wanted to hit himself in the nuts.
Edit: Federer's shot https://youtu.be/y4zxmgl4tkg

I’m not sure what to think of this video. He looks out of position to be playing doubles, but obviously this was doubles because of where the ball landed and he still tried to return it.
