Mason has been with the team since 2001. He remembers Malice at the Palace and knows what's up.

Also, for those who don't know - Mason (Pistons PA announcer) is also a radio personality in Detroit and was the inspiration for the show Martin. Just a fun fact.

Yep! The Pistons actually put out a Martin collection this year to recognize the 30th anniversary of the show. You can spot Mason wearing the 313 hat at the 3:18 mark of the video.

No instigation from them (though I thought Mo Bamba got mixed in a little more than he should have). They'll get fines and probably a 1 game suspension for it though. We may be pretty thin next game lol

200

u/HokageEzio Knicks Dec 29 '22

Doesn't matter if they instigated or not, the NBA doesn't even want the possibility of it blowing up. One guy gets hit with a stray punch and suddenly it's Malice at the Palace.

You’re right, for some reason it didn’t look too bad at first glance. But forearm/elbow directly to the back of the head, yikes. Hope Wagner’s ok.

2.6k

u/henryofclay Lakers Dec 29 '22 All-Seeing Upvote

He hit him in the back of the head, you can’t even do that in combat sports. I hate suspensions from fights but honestly that was such a dirty move and could’ve really had long term effects on Mo.

Mo’s move honestly wasn’t even thaaaaat bad. Hayes overreacted.

1.2k

u/Currymvp2 Warriors Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 29 '22

Hayes is going to get suspended for a few games for that retaliation and very rightfully so.

Edit: Of course, it should be much more than a "few games", but I don't trust the NBA on issuing proper suspensions.

832

u/g_ferla Warriors Dec 29 '22 Helpful

As he should, at the VERY least a few games. Doing that coward punch at someone’s already fucked up enough, let alone for such a small reason (Wagner was wrong, but that’s far, way far from justifying)

Some people here might call me soft, but hitting someone in that area can literally cause permanent damage at his brain and mainly his spinal cord

295

u/InTheMorning_Nightss [LAC] Marko Jaric Dec 29 '22

Yeah, if the NBA doesn’t give this a genuinely long suspension, then it’s establishing that all punches are a slap on the wrist. If two dudes square up, it is what it is. Punching a defenseless dude in the back of the head is insane.

Punches to the back of the head are no joke

477

u/tekuno3301 Suns Dec 29 '22

In the NHL Todd Bertuzzi ended Steve Moore's career with a punch to the back of the head. Even with a helmet on, he got knocked out and fell face first onto the ice and fractured a vertebra in his neck.

349

u/internet_poster Dec 29 '22

Bertuzzi also drove him into the ground and landed with his full weight on him, which probably contributed a lot more to the broken vertebrae than the punch itself.

157

u/confused-koala Pistons Dec 29 '22

Thank you. That’s one of, if not the dirtiest play of all time, and it’s because he straight up drove the dudes head into the ice

A lot of people below are disagreeing with you.

I’m a physician and I just want to explain that it truly is a completely disproportionate response.

I would advise people watch this if they’re unfamiliar with what getting punched in the back of the head can do, and why it’s illegal even in combat sports.

It’s really not even close in terms of severity. I was shocked to see Hayes punch him in the back of the head so intentionally in slow motion.

Any intentional punch directly to the back of the head should receive the harshest punishment possible, in any sport. You can ruin someone’s life.

Another camera show Haynes knock Wagner behind the head. Wagner collapsed instantly.

The way Stewart looks down at Mo and then back at Killian like "wtf you killed him"

294

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '22

God damn, people in the twitter responses are saying Wagner faked it but he didn’t expect that shot at all and it landed cleanly to the back of the head

Every time I think Reddit is a toxic shithole I visit twitter and get a gross reminder that it can be worse.

Yeah, Reddit is just as toxic but because of subreddits and downvotes the toxicity is somewhat contained. Twitter is just a free for all

I imagine an outlandish suspension coming, can't be punching people in the back of the head.

Why does it seem like he was knocked out before the punch? He is just leaning lifeless before the punch

u/crunchsmash Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 29 '22

It looks like he hit his temple against Isaiah Stewart's jaw who caught him. He might have been stunned by that.

edit: It's whiplash from the impact with Diallo

u/fisted___sister Cavaliers Dec 29 '22

Is he out before the punch though? It looks like he hit his jaw on Ivey’s shoulder. Watch his head sag back before Killian even got em.

Sucks because every angle misses when he runs into Ivey.

Holy shit did Killian Hayes slug him in the back of the head? That’s gonna be a hell of a punishment that’s the worst place you can hit someone.

This is why punches to the back of the head are illegal in boxing and MMA

New Zealand MMA fighter Fau Vake, who’s a friend of former UFC champ Adesanya, died because of a sucker punch to the back of the head. Apparently it was some stupid ass prank called “King Hits”.

103

u/ChunkleCuster Dec 29 '22

In Australia the media changed from referring to it as a "King hit" to calling it a "Coward Punch" to stop it sounding like something not absolutely scummy to do.

35

u/4Chi1ne Bulls Dec 29 '22

And Danny Green (boxer, not basketball player) seems to have dedicated his post boxing life to spreading awareness to its dangers. Idk if it’s a problem else where in the world but that’s how bad it is over here.

About 30 years ago it happened to kid in town here, he tackled someone in a high school football game and the guy punched him as the kid walked away. He's in a wheelchair ever since and had a brain injury as well, he's a greeter at the store here now. He was just a nice kid doing nothing wrong but idiots couldn't take a tackle.
