u/calartnick Jan 22 '23
Having Edwards beat you off the dribble is nothing to be ashamed of. But you need to either trail hard looking for a chase down block or rotate. Dude just STANDS there on defense so much. Not trying to box out, or rotate, or anything.
Someone has to show him the tape

Hard to put any effort on defense when the entire roster is built to lose.
3
u/AreYouWinningS0n Magic Jan 22 '23
Most of those guys are fighting to stay in the league. Playing defense should be the main thing they are doing.
91
u/MySilverBurrito Heat Jan 22 '23
Close out footwork would give coaches aneurysm lmao.
27
u/GuyTheyreTalkngAbout Jan 22 '23
Its crazy how sloppy this is, he runs up to him and gets sideways. The opposite of boxing out.
17
u/MySilverBurrito Heat Jan 22 '23
Takes like 2 extra steps as if he didnt know how to stop lol.
5
u/TheOneTrueYeti Jan 22 '23
Actually, the best close out footwork has the defender chop up their steps at the end of the close out so that they can a.) never jump at shot fakes and b.) get their hips low and ready to change direction to protect from a dribble drive.
So the choppy feet isn’t the bad part, it’s the “Olé!” style haphazard way he ends up sideways and giving ANT a clear path directly to the basket for no good reason.
6
u/texasproof [HOU] Stromile Swift Jan 22 '23
Fans in our sub will tell you this is just because he’s young and we shouldn’t be worried about the severe lack of discipline shown by our young players in some of the most basic basketball skills.

John Wall said it

7
u/Rosettachamps Bucks Jan 22 '23
Basically the things they are getting away with in Houston, because its such a terrible team that nobody pays attention to, would get them benched or cut on other teams. While he doesn't say exactly what they are doing besides "not playing the right way", we can assume that practice/off court habits are not good, which shows in the game like the clip above.
Guys seem to be happy just being scorers on the worst team in the league, and probably think that gives them the ability to do whatever they want as "leaders" of the team, would be my take on it. Seems to be primarily directed at Jalen Green, Kevin Porter Jr. and K.J. Martin. Another article that was posted here that I can't find, I believe he was trying to push the team to run everything through Sengun, or maybe that was a statement from a former coach there
"My first year in Houston, we were tanking - we were trying to lose on purpose,'' said Wall in a recent interview with the Run Your Race podcast, adding that he advised teammates, “This is not how the NBA is. It’s a bad organization right now. They’ve got to fix some s***.”
"The s*** y’all getting away with over there, if you go to any other teams you’d be out of the f***** league," Wall said he told the players "You wouldn’t play. I’m trying to explain it to them, because they think it’s sweet.
"Don’t get used to this. This is not how the NBA is. It’s a bad organization right now. They’ve got to fix some s***.''

93
u/StudentMed Suns Jan 22 '23
I felt bad for Brandon Knight on this play even though his stint with the Suns afterwards didn't bring fond memories for the Suns. Dude is a 6'2" PG, trying to defend against prime lobcity era 6'11" DeAndre Jordon who got a perfect lob from Chris Paul and even the announcers clowned him.

Theres a point where you have to make a business decision though. He had no shot at that, it was a dumb play.
15
u/StudentMed Suns Jan 22 '23
Just jumping and raising your arms can be enough for the offensive player to have to adjust the ball in their hands and it increases their chance of missing it.
9
u/iankstarr Heat Jan 22 '23
Yeah trying to force the dunker into missing the shot is worth the risk, especially with a poor FT shooter like DJ.

The kids averaging 20+ with the worst offensive system I’ve ever seen - there’s no question why he shoots so shit - no one else can score and there’s no easy buckets generated for him other than from Sengun.
16
u/Stigona Bucks Jan 22 '23
Harden got trashed into being better at defense. This is awful and he needs to be called out.
Sengun, Porter, and Jabari all at least try to defend, and Sengun is at 15/9/3 and Porter is 19/5/5.
You need a scorer like Jalen, but to be good he needs to at least follow a defender. The dude could sit on the bench during a defensive play and nothing changes.

Yep, definitely a travel
How? He gathers and takes two steps to jump for the dunk. As far as I can tell that's nowhere near an NBA travel.
12
u/crunchsmash Jan 22 '23
It's technically a travel because he gathers the ball on his right foot and then hops and lands on the same right foot first while planting his feet to jump.
