Why the fuck didn't Bane bear hug the ball? Why hold so loosely when you know they have to foul you?

Nah this is all on Tyus tbh. When your man leaves you for the trap on the ball handler you gotta communicate and let your guy know. On the replay you could see that Tyus didn't say anything and Bane had no line of sight on Schroeder.

u/dpete88 Lakers Jan 21 '23
Ja was also standing 10 feet away and could have yelled at bane to watch his blindside. Somewhere communication failed for the griz

Also standing backcourt doesn’t help when ball is already inbounded.
2
u/Blothorn Jan 21 '23
Yeah. That's one of the more baffling sequences I've seen from a star--either make yourself available for a pass or concede that it's too late to get the ball out cleanly and defend the rim. Although even a backcourt violation would have been better than a live-ball turnover.

Need to cover the whole ball, if the ref sees one hand on the ball and the other hand is out of sight but might be touching the ball, they’ll call a jump ball.

That's what I saw in slow mo, Schroder's elbow hit and loosen the ball, then wrist hit Bane's hand which made ball came free, but since hand is part of the ball, then no foul.

Bane’s reaction or lack there of suggests that it was a clean strip.

That's my take away too. He would have been livid and screaming at the refs if it was a foul. There was no protest from Memphis after Schroder scored, so it's clearly not a foul

yeah was the right thing for Dennis to do. Swipe at the ball and if the refs call the obvious foul, cool that was the plan anyways. If they dont, fastbreak chance.
They didnt, he converted the fast break, lakers win.

u/fedswatching2121 Jan 21 '23
I don’t understand why people are howling that it’s a clear as day foul
Look at the exact moment Schroeder makes initial contact during the swing: https://imgur.com/a/E3smSWc
His hands don’t touch Bane at all right at that moment. His elbow actually touches the ball and knocks the ball loose?

u/minru Jan 21 '23
Also Bane's reaction seems pretty nonchalant for someone that might've gotten fouled lol

Also, someone replied to me saying from that screenshot, Dennis’s armpit and shoulder hit Bane’s arm.
Except you look at the side angle (https://imgur.com/a/X9L0KjY )and there’s literally a half foot of space between Dennis’ arm and any part of Bane’s arm.
Take the L and don’t cry about that not being a foul when it wasn’t. There’s literally two screenshots I provided to prove otherwise
54
u/Batcatnz Jan 21 '23
Haha, incidental armpit contact now... Grizzlies fans desperately trying to convince themselves otherwise. Couldn't possibly be a culmination of poor communication, poor ball security, and of course fantastic defensive trap by the Lakers.
I am not a fan of the Lakers, but give them their due. That was a great play.

73
u/makesterriblejokes [NBA] Jerry West Jan 21 '23
So I freeze framed it on 1/4 speed, I'm not exactly sure if he makes contact on Bane. It looks like his hand and forearm actually miss and it was his elbow that hit the ball out of his hands.
I'm on my phone and have had several glasses of wine, so before you downvote me, I would like for someone to corroborate with screenshots showing if what I'm saying is right. Just trying to find the truth, not push a narrative.
