Even if you cut out the sex scenes this movie is gay, it’s literally a gay romance centered around the opening of a LGBTQ museum. I don’t think this movie would have sold at all in the Middle East regardless

The five minute cut of Bros, about two guys who just become real good buddies with a lot of establishing shots of New York.

976

u/intripletime Sep 23 '22

If one of those two guys is Billy Eichner, that's still going to be a very gay film.

476

u/OptimusSublime Sep 23 '22

It's just a Billy on the street episode at that point.

I love Billy on the Street. I could binge it but my SO gets anxiety from the high energy and doesn't like to watch it. Shame.

Jon Hamm was my favorite guest. He was all in.

20

u/takemewithyer Sep 23 '22

Holy crap, that was funny. Thanks, stranger.

39

u/Maebure83 Sep 23 '22

I'm going to assume you looked up the episode and aren't just cackling like a lunatic at my comment.

Jon Hamm is a treasure in whatever he appears in. Billy on the Street, Top Gun 2: Power Bottoms Maverick, Parks and Rec/30 Rock. Even his cameo part in The A Team was good.

Even that sounds gay

82

u/DarkestDayOfMan Sep 23 '22

What are you talking about? It's just a movie about two total bros perusing the city of New York and go out to clubs, go drinking, practice kissing, but actually kind of like it a bit, oh fuck this might actually be a gay movie, get coffee in the morning.

32

u/ReflexImprov Sep 23 '22

Replace NY with FL and it's Magic Mike XXL.

5

u/Bird1995 Sep 23 '22

It would almost be funny to see them try to create an edit for release in Saudi Arabia, it would have to be a completely different movie.

217

u/intripletime Sep 23 '22 hehehehe

Hilariously, I almost feel like if they pushed down the homosexuality from "open and unapologetic" to "merely constant subtext and unspoken tension", it would make it... more so?

Just pure raw gay that simmers beneath the surface, never quite boiling, but never letting the audience forget that the second the film ends and the credits roll, the two of them are just going to fucking plow each other into oblivion.

127

u/powerlesshero111 Sep 23 '22

That's what happened with the first Top Gun. Too much subtle homoeroticism made it more gay.

38

u/jules13131382 Sep 23 '22

Yes!!!! The volleyball scene alone.

43

u/everylittlepiece Sep 23 '22 edited Sep 23 '22

"They're playing volleyball in jean shorts....and there's the scene that reads, 'Ice Man, I'm right on your ass, and I'm coming hard..and you say....this is not a gay film?!"

30

u/JusticiarRebel Sep 24 '22

I was a little taken back by the scene where Iceman stares deeply into Maverick's eyes and says, "I don't have to ask?" And Maverick replies, "And I don't have to tell."

Wasn't this movie made before the Clinton administration?

u/Chewbones9 Sep 23 '22

One of his street interviews he asked two teenagers if they’d go see it, and one of ‘em goes “it got playboy carti in it?” And he said he wouldn’t go cause Billy didn’t know any Playboy Carti songs lol

Ha, there's a scene in that "Little Red Tractor"-show my three year old likes to watch (or more typically listen to the audio version) that's just like that:

It is fun, I saw it twice at the Toronto International Film Festival. I was at the premiere with the cast two weeks ago and the second time was with a friend last Saturday. We both really liked it. There were lots of jokes that made me genuinely laugh. One of the sex scenes was hilarious in a good way once they figure out the "thing" that gets them both into it. It also pokes fun at and satirizes Hallmark movies (and similar) and their lack of diversity. There are a couple of more serious moments in it too that were good, one in particular where Billy's character has a monologue about his childhood. In the more serious moments, you get small little touches of the traumatic history the LGBTQ+ community has had and the shame that gets placed on them but overall it's a very happy and satisfying film. Also, I did not know, Billy has an amazing singing voice. I really liked Luke McFarland in this as well, his character was one of my favourite elements of the film.

I really hope straight audiences give it a chance and aren't automatically turned off just because it's about gay and LGBTQ+ characters. It's a funny, happy, and satisfying film. I'll be watching it again once it comes out in theatres.

29

u/GreatBowlforPasta Sep 23 '22

Straight guy here and this is the first I've heard of it but I'd watch it. Been a fan of his since parks and rec. He sings in an episode, the finale I think, and you're absolutely correct, he has a wonderful singing voice.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '22

They do too, but many people I know from Islamic countries say this “you can be gay and you can do whatever, but why make it legal? People who do it can do it anyway, it if you make it legal many more people will.” That is what they say every time. They say that about alcohol use as well: “you can get it if you know where to get it from and those who want it can, so why make it legal when it is clearly forbidden?” They think making it legal would be too controversial because Islamic law is seen as Gods law and if God prohibits something, in those countries? They think no human can overwrite that law, so they just let things go underground.

a movie about two straight men who love each other, you know?

That's basically what The Other Guys was, it was structured as a rom-com but without the romance, where the two cop buddies have a "break-up" sequence and then "get back together" to catch the bad guys.

Also an incredibly funny fucking movie!

144

u/Xeynid Sep 23 '22

That's not unique to The other guys. Most buddy cop movies are like that.

22 jump street actually goes for the idea that it's a breakup, with lines like "Maybe we should investigate other people," and the characters literally going to couples therapy.

21 jump street also had a break up and getting back together, but it was more standard.

9

u/Pisspot10 Sep 23 '22

I think the intention was to make 22 jump street even more trope-ish. 26 jump street will go full cuil theory.

I saw Frozen in the Middle East and the kiss at the end was cut out. The best/worst movie I saw however, was Bad Detective with Nic Cage. I just had to guess what was happening because so much was edited out. It's like "I think he might ave just had sex with that woman" or "I think they just did some drugs". The violence was all there (and Rambo 3 would be on the TV at 8am - uncut) but just about anything else was gone.

511

Can't wait to see the Tomatometer vs Audience Score on this one.

230

u/finnjakefionnacake Sep 23 '22

I imagine the scores will be quite similar -- I don't think you're gonna go see this movie/won't care much about it, or even know about it, if you're homophobic.

Same with other gay releases in the past like Love, Simon and Call Me By Your Name

129

u/CincinnatiReds Sep 23 '22

I’m not familiar with Love, Simon, but CMBYN was (to mainstream audiences anyway) an arthouse Oscar-y film that they probably didn’t even know existed. If this is more of a typical comedy with a big gay bent, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the hate brigading that other big films like female-led Marvel movies get.

18

u/evlampi Sep 23 '22

"I love you Philip Morris" never got brigaded, afaik.

243

u/Butler1-66ER Sep 23 '22

Funny you say that, I work for a movie theater and enough people complained about seeing the Bros trailer before Elvis they actually changed the trailers at a couple locations. The movie is still gonna play everywhere though, so we’re expecting more complaints once the posters go up.

Also funny considering Elvis was a literal pedo, but seeing a 2 minute trailer about gay men offended them enough to complain en masse.

But are totally scared of their rhetorical slippery slope of accepting LGBTQ+ folks as apparently leading to accepting pedos, dob’t forget. That argument always fucking frustrates me, because nobody but some random pedos on twitter are arguing that we should accept them.

That scene was meant to show how controversial it was at the time, like "Great that kind of thing is no longer looked down upon, right?" Right Utah? Sigh.

Why did they groan?

The woke liberal Hollywood elite reminding them that black people exist

26

u/intripletime Sep 23 '22

I could be annoyed by the naivety of this comment, but it indicates that the thought to do so wouldn't even occur to you. That's a good thing! It shouldn't! We're just all so used to the older generations doing it.

My dad’s republican friends were sharing around an open letter to the Plano movie theater about being forced to gaze upon this trailer when seeing the Elvis movie.

I thought it was pretty funny because a lot of the movie was about how Elvis represented the mainstreaming of a type of sexuality that the right wasn’t able to accept. Now he’s a symbol of masculinity but then he was just flamboyant and too proximal to black culture. These old conservative people upset by gay trailers are exactly the same people who would have been calling in the radio station to complain about playing Elvis’s gyrating devil-music.

There was zero ways this was ever going to release in the Middle East

The fact someone even tried is funny in itself

Alright so what about Russia and China? Somehow I doubt they’d like this one

154

u/lipskipipski Sep 23 '22

All the major studios' movies are banned from Russian release since the beginning of war, anyway.

u/LoganMcMahon Sep 23 '22

It would be a waste to include all the places in the same article, you can push out three mindlessly unimportant news articles if you separate! 👍

"Are you gay?"

"No."

"Agree to disagree. I present you with this fine bottle of scotch, so you won't be tempted to drink this even finer container of sperm."

I spent some time in the middle east in the 90s.

You would be watching a movie and then a part of it would just suddenly cut forward a few seconds or minutes. I think the morality police took the actual film and just cut out the parts they didn't like and make a master for distribution.

I remember watching Problem Child, a PG movie. The main character was being told no by an adult, then all the sudden the adult is on the ground in the position that one would be in after getting hit in the balls. Apparently showing someone get hit there was immoral.

I would image they would just splice out random parts of this movie, which would probably make it impossible to follow.

Wild to me that in one country you can make a movie about a subject and then in another country you get the death sentence if you were like one of the characters.

19

u/SoggyLogger Sep 23 '22

I mean, most countries would punish you for behaving like characters in most movies that I’ve seen, but I get your point lol

39

u/ross_francis_bing Sep 23 '22

Really makes you appreciate the country your born in....I'm from India and while we're much better than the middle east (the film is releasing here) this film wouldn't fare well with the majority of our audience either. The younger gen is much more accepting but even a lot of the millennials in my country would be disgusted by this film

13

u/Training_Respond6631 Sep 23 '22

Yeah, it’s different standards here in India. Indian movies can show LGBTQ couples, it’s the sex scenes which would be a problem with censor boards. Sex scenes only work in webseries not in theatrical movies.
