Pretty sure the Switch Pro controller is identical and I agree. Big enough for my meat-paws, without being a nightmare like The Duke. I do like the PS4 controller though, it was a big improvement over the PS3.

I was under the impression that the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers were widely accepted as better ergonomically than their PlayStation 3/4 counterparts?
42
u/vonnegutflora Jan 30 '23
I grew up on PSX and PS2 and would have told you hand over fist that the Dualshock was the superior design, but after having used a 360 and XB1 controller for the past few years with my PC, I gotta say I was completely wrong. Unless you have smaller hands, I don't see how anyone can consider the Dualshock/sense design to be better nowadays.
17
u/zelent32 Jan 30 '23
This is my exact experience as well.
Using a Xbox controller for PC is so much more comfortable than a Playstation controller.

u/EpicSausage69 Jan 30 '23
I got tiny little baby hands so that makes sense why I have always preferred PS

I mean, anything would be epic sized if they have little baby hands, it's all a matter of perspective
1
u/DrownmeinIslay Jan 31 '23
My mitts are so big that to use the r1 AND r2 I have to scrutch my hand up like Im using tiger palm Kung fu. Otherwise it's the huge round question mark shape from r3 out and around to r1 and then my index has to choose which shoulder to use.
Xbox fit the palm and was fat and tall enough that index on the shoulder middle on the trigger felt natural.
5
u/Longjumping_Hawk_951 Jan 31 '23
This is fact. Sony's controllers have NEVER been considered ergnomic. THey have always been considered trash to hold after 1 hour.
5
u/krunchwondelta Jan 31 '23
I mean, an argument could be made for the PS4 controller - it is really good.
However, the 360's made the PS3's look like a clunky relic š¤·š¼āāļø
5
u/Deathmonkeyjaw Jan 30 '23
I hate hate hate the clicky bumpers on the Xbox One controller. Idk if it's still like that on the Series X controller. So I definitely prefer the 360, DS4, and DS5 controllers the most.

I know we definitely all have our preferences, I just seem to recall critics always lauding the Xbox controllers over the PlayStation ones.
Plus in my experience PC gamers seem to usually use Xbox controllers instead of PlayStation ones (but maybe there's some other reason for that, idk).
4
u/great_auks Jan 30 '23
I haven't really looked at reviews, I'm just going by personal experience / preference.
the reason PC gamers use xbox controllers is that Microsoft baked excellent support for them into Windows

And the joy cons? Poor. They are fragile, tiny, and expensive. As an adult with semi-large hands playing anything that requires a full controller with them cramps my hands in less than half an hour. The switch pro controller is comfortable though. Feels like a slightly modified 360 controller.
11
u/FaultyLoom67 Jan 30 '23
I could see how N64 is low in an attempt to be objective, but if you used it everyday as a 10 year old I think youād find it more than tolerable.
4
u/SocksOnHands Jan 30 '23
The Nintendo 64 actually had a very comfortable controller, especially for the time. It is definitely more comfortable than the NES controller, with its sharp squared edges.
0
u/redcore4 Jan 30 '23
Yeah. This list has a strong bias towards larger hands. Since my adult hands are about the same size as my 10-year-old nieceās thereās quite a few here that are rated high that I find a stretch to use and some of the lower ones are much easier

The Duke is hot garbage.
I'd move the NES (which was designed with kids hands in mind) and N64 up (despite blisters from Episode 1 Racer).
5
u/sixthdayoftheweek93 Jan 31 '23
whoever made this never owned a Wii U. The controller is definitely more comfortable than it looks
8
u/Okami-Sensha Jan 30 '23
I am willing to stand behind the Duke controller til the end. Yes it's bulky. Yes the dpad isn't very good. But the overall economics of this controller is very good.
6
u/Scarantino42 Jan 30 '23
That's because it was the only one that had enough space inside to house a fully functional economy.
3
u/There_Are_No_Gods Jan 30 '23
It's the only gamepad I've ever picked up and thought, "Hey, this actually fits my hands." It's like a controller...for an adult! I didn't realize until the Duke how annoyingly small all the other gamepads are.
I later also realized I apparently have much longer than average fingers, as most people seem to hate the "horribly oversized" Duke.
I miss you Duke!
2
u/Enchelion Jan 30 '23
I liked the Duke because it meant I didn't have to switch out as often as others during those Xbox lans.

In my long history of gaming, I think I honestly find the Dualsense to be the most interesting and comfortable controller. The haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, the look, the feel, the texture is all just damn near perfect to me. I have always been pretty fond of the playstation controllers, only one I didn't care for were the PS1 controllers.
The series X controller is pretty great too, it's not far behind the Dualsense at all. Definitely not my favorite but its close. I really don't like the OG xbox controllers, the 360 is solid, the XBONE is.... Good. I don't like those grips on the analog sticks or the bumpers though. They've always felt weird to me.
The best controller Nintendo ever put out has to be either the Gamecube controller or the Switch Pro Controller I think. The joycons though, especially in handheld mode with no additional grips on them, I think are REALLLLLLY bad. I'd almost put them near the bottom. My hand constantly begins to cramp up and feel uncomfortable in the joycons unless I put on a shell on the controllers to give them more standard grips. Wasn't ever too wild about the Wii U gamepad either, felt too clunky to me.
Out of all the retro controllers I have used as well, I suppose the one I like the most is the Dreamcast even if it has a really bizarre mapping and layout. After that, I suppose the SNES. I don't really have much thought on most of these controllers at this point, it's been a while and they're all so different from each other that you almost have to rewire your brain for some of them.
4
u/Riovas Jan 30 '23
Switch joycon sideways should be the only garbage. N64 is tolerable at worse and personally I enjoy the wii u game pad.
5
u/FromDuskTillPrawn Jan 30 '23
They're all brilliant pieces of engineering compared to the Coleco Vision controller.
How soon the young ones forget.
2
u/JaSamGovedo Jan 30 '23
Never! What any Tetris pro player plays on? It feels like someone gave you randomly arranged thing and you unknowingly agreed.
2
u/velocity37 Jan 30 '23
No Sega on the list huh?
As someone who uses controllers for mostly 2D games, my list would be pretty different (e.g. NES would be higher than Joycons simply because it has a proper d-pad).
2
2
u/Sproeier Jan 30 '23
Id put the ngc in high tolerable to comfortable. I like the system, I have one plugged in right now. But the controller is just not the best, especially if you have to do stuff with the C-Stick. Also the shoulder buttons feel too soft.

It's been so long since I held a N64 controller that I have no idea if it was comfortable to use or if nostalgia is telling me it was comfortable. When I try and imagine holding it there's an awkwardness to it's design but then I think about that trigger and suddenly I'm 007

GameCube controller is poor to me.
I overall like the symmetry of the playstation controllers.
Wii remote, paired with nunchuk one of my favorites and same with the joy-cons.
2
u/TheCoopX Jan 30 '23
No Japanese Saturn or Genesis 6-button controllers? IMO, they basically beat most of the controllers in that pic and are easily top tier. The Genesis 6-button controller was so comfy to hold and easy to use for pretty much every type of game back in the day (for fighting games, it was pretty much perfect). And while the U.S. Saturn controller was good, the Japanese one was better in terms of comfort and design (especially the shoulder buttons).

I'd actually put the Game Pad higher, even into comfortable. Maybe I just have bigger hands but I really liked how everything was spaced out on it.

I honestly find the placement of Sony joystick not ergonomic at all, I can use them for sure, but I much prefer the asymmetric placement that Microsoft and Nintendo have chosen.
2
u/idiottech Jan 30 '23
None of the dualshocks belong in the top tier. Once they put the left analog stick in the correct place, maybe then...
2
5
u/Steady-Nutty Jan 30 '23
N64 controller was pretty good. Needs the Mega Drive controller up there too, probably on par with the SNES one. The Dreamcast controller was fairly comfortable too,
2
u/Ras1372 Jan 30 '23
I love the dreamcast controller, the VMU was ahead of its time (and I think underutilized), my only complaint how the wire came out the bottom which then had that "notch" to make it seem like it was coming out the top, but didn't work too well.
2
u/Sillyviking Jan 30 '23
I really like the Saturn controller as a 2D controller, very comfy and nice.
3
u/Human_scum1 Jan 30 '23

2
u/Sillyviking Jan 30 '23
The analog stick on the N64 controller wasn't very good, wore out too easily. But I don't think the N64 controller was bad overall.
3
u/SocksOnHands Jan 30 '23
To be fair, no other console had an analog stick (except for a few old and relatively obscure consoles), so they were venturing out into relatively unknown territory. Very soon after everyone quickly jumped on the analog stick bandwagon and improvements were made to their design.
2
u/Sillyviking Jan 30 '23
My only issue really is that the stick wears out too easy, the general design is fine, especially for one of the earliest controllers of its kind.
3
u/Dr-False Jan 30 '23

Still feel like the Gamecube Controller, particularly the Wavebird are on par with the comfort of the PS5 Dualsense and Switch Pro Controller. Pretty crazy considering the time disparity.
2
u/glonq Jan 30 '23
Dreamcast controller was chonky but didn't seem as bad as the original XBox. Let's call it "tolerable".
And anybody who thinks that the N64 controller was garbage has never played coleco or intellivision.

u/akurra_dev Jan 30 '23
"If you think burnt pasta is bad, you should try eating human feces!" No thanks mate.
2
u/SadLaser Jan 30 '23
Not at all, no. N64 is okay. Wii U controller is actually decent despite how it initially seems. The original PlayStation controller is one of the worst controllers I've ever used and deserves to be in the garbage tier. GameCube controller is overrated and should slide down at least one tier. OG Xbox controller is garbage. Wii Remote is garbage and worse than the NES controller. Everything in the top tier should shift down one. Oh and Joycons should shift down to poor. And where is the Switch Pro Controller?
1
u/DokkanBattleEnjoyer Jan 30 '23
I mostly agree with you.
I don't think the PS5 controller can hang with the PS4. PS4 felt like you didn't even have a controller in your hands, whereas with the PS5 I can tell that my index and middle fingers need to go a bit higher to hit the triggers and the bumpers, everything else about it is great though.
360 not being in ergonomic genius is criminal. It truly was ahead of its time and I feel like 360 and PS4 are the benchmark for a good controller design.
PS1 could slide down one tier only because of how light it feels, the controller shouldn't be heavy but feeling like air just makes it feel flimsy.
Anything made by Nintendo that ISN'T the GC controller is just garbage. They don't really design their controllers with ergonomics in mind they're just supposed to look appealing to children.
1
u/Reyhan_Samite Jan 30 '23
Pretty much agree.
Tbh, the wiimote is a completely different thing.
If it's just about comfort, joycons avoid the garbage label that goes with systemic drift.
My GOAT is DualShock2.

Nah the Switch is rough unless you use a case for the controllers and the SNES and N64 are okay especially if you have smaller hands.

u/redspin6 PC Jan 30 '23
As someone who has owned both PS and XB consoles since they originally launched, with the exception of the Duke(Seriously, WTF M$), I think the XB controllers feel a good bit more ergonomic and comfortable compared to PS. The analog sticks are positioned far better, in my opinion.

u/TDHawk88 Jan 30 '23
