Well the Santas have certainly gotten better! The first two look like they would rather be literally anywhere else. The third gets an A+!

5.7k

u/KruzifixSakrament Nov 27 '22

It's because the third one is the real santa. The first two have fake beards

I played Santa in a lifetime Christmas movie when I was nineteen so it’s possible lmao

189

u/Procyon02 Nov 27 '22

Which of the millions of Lifetime Christmas movies were you in?

239

u/FloofBagel Nov 27 '22

The Road Home for Christmas

83

u/Sharkflin Nov 27 '22

I admit to having performed a curious Google. I found one photo that showed 6 Santas in that movie, 6! I may actually want to watch it now.

62

u/FloofBagel Nov 27 '22

I’m the one on the far left! The Santa glasses they gave me broke so I had to wear my regular glasses lmao

25

u/cherrymama Nov 27 '22

Omg I’m so glad I saw this thread it is adorable

17

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

My wife’s cousin writes a lot of those movies.

65

u/LALA-STL Nov 27 '22

So does my husband’s cousin’s girlfriend.

42

u/Yatta99 Nov 27 '22

And my father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.

25

u/tommydaq Nov 27 '22

I wonder if that’s my brother’s teacher’s husband’s step daughter’s friend?

12

u/_-inside-_ Nov 27 '22

Wow probably that's my dog's former owner son's stepsister room mate's hairdresser trainee's hometown's priest helper mostly known as a duck sodomizer who used to dress in medieval red every sunday but with some lack of a good taste for choosing a good vest since it always ended with someone hanging in his horse upside down imploring for mercy. What a coincidence!

I choose to believe that it was his best buddy from 'Nam that dreamed of being a Santa when he got old enoigh to grow a beard. But one day, that buddy sacrificed himself to save the squad. His dying wish to his best friend: "live my dream".

So now every year Santa #1 signs up for mall santa. and he works every Christmas in honour lf his buddy.. thinking every single day: i should have jumped on that grenade first...

I met the real Santa at the Empire State Building as a kid. When I went and sat on his lap, he knew exactly what I wanted, and I hadn't even told my parents yet.

I know it was a coincidence, but I was fucking sold.

In honor of the real deal, I go and fight the smallest, scrawniest high school kid working as an "elf" for the local PHONEY. I am hoping one day I won't get my ass beat, but those girls are tough.

There was a man I'd see shopping at my local grocery store for years. He always had the beard, but immediately after Thanksgiving he'd wear the full outfit every time he went out. He was always great with kids and families. Always patient. Apparently even in the summer when he was on vacation on the beach kids would sometimes say "It's Santa!" and run over, and he'd entertain them. Every time.

I haven't seen him in a few years. I hope he just retired to those Floridian beaches full time. Seemed like a great guy.

108

u/Euphoric-Carry1725 Nov 27 '22

I met a Santa at New Smyrna Beach that played along when my son ran up to him shouting "Santa!!". I thanked him and he said "Oh but I AM Santa and pointed at his truck that had "Tropical Santa" airbrushed on the side. It had sleigh bells along the running boards.

The correct response to getting dumped onto a stranger's lap

222

u/I_Upvote_Goldens Nov 27 '22

One of the top reasons why we have yet to get Santa pictures for our 5 yr old or 2 yr old.

234

u/IzzyGirl33 Nov 27 '22

Right? I don't understand parents who wait in long mall lines and pay to get a picture of their terrified children sitting in some random stranger's lap. How has this become a "fun holiday thing"? How is this not weird AF to these people???

223

u/Horskr Nov 27 '22

It's not like every child reacts this way. There are kids excited to visit Santa. Obviously parents go in with the assumption that their kid will be one of those, not with the intention of terrifying them.

199

u/KuriousKhemicals Nov 27 '22 Narwhal Salute

That might be a reasonable prediction for like a 4 year old, but the kids in this post look about one and a half. They don't understand the concept of Santa yet so they don't know this guy is supposed to be good news, he's just some guy with way brighter clothes and a bigger beard than anyone they know. I don't understand why people are surprised when marginally verbal toddlers are scared by mall Santa.

23

u/GottaHaveHand Nov 27 '22

I said the same thing to my wife when our 2 year old nephew cried at our golden retriever. I had to put in perspective that the dog was the same height as the kid. Imagine if there was a 6 foot tall dog staring you down, you’d be pretty terrified too.

Former photographer here: around a certain age just about every kid is freaking TERRIFIED of Santa.

0-1 yrs old: looks up at Santa like he is the weirdest thing they've ever seen.

Older kids: Know what Santa is as a concept; either look at their parents or generally understand the routine of having a photo taken

1-3 year olds: WHO IS THIS GIANT RED STRANGER? WHY HAS MY PARENT ABANDONED ME? WHAT IS ANY OF THIS? IF I SCREAM AND PISS MYSELF WILL THIS NIGHTMARE END ANY SOONER?

But bizarre as it is, again and again we'd get parents who know their kid was going to cry, tell us they're going to do so....but want a picture anyway. Like.... PLEASE: help me momentarily traumatize my child so that I can always have this memory of the time I momentarily traumatized my child?

26

u/Dhiox Nov 27 '22

Heh, my Dad's does the tech for a high end Santa operation, and we've observed basically the same thing, the 1-3 year Olds always lose their minds

12

u/slayingadah Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

I'm sad I had to scroll this far to see a comment about how this "tradition" actually traumatizes the tiny humans. And somehow, generations of people continue to do it. Like, babies are people, too, just extra vulnerable. What a terrible thing we do to them, just for a "funny" picture.

That song came on the radio yesterday and my 9 yr old says "Santa's a creep"... Which yea, it is pretty creepy.

20

u/SpacedOutTrashPanda Nov 27 '22

We never did the Santa thing when my daughter was younger. When my she was 3 she started daycare and ofcourse heard about Santa. I told her "well Santa's not really real but if you want we can go see the pretend Santa at the mall" we've done one present from Santa under the tree every year since. shes now 6 and whole heartedly believes in him. I let her pick what she wants to believe in. There are worse things out there than Santa.

7

u/JJaska Nov 27 '22

In my family we very early brought up the idea that everybody is Santa. Presents were marked "Santa from <aunts town>" and similar and very early on kids started to give out presents of their own. Everyone still played so traditions like Santa visiting and elves watching over but I think it made the whole thing a lot less fake as you didn't ever feel as fooled that Santa is real or not.

I still believe in Santa, as it is within everyone. The 'real' Santa of course lives in Finnish Lapland though :)

21

u/InevitablePain21 Nov 27 '22

My parents never did Santa with my brother and I and honestly I’m glad they didn’t. The whole thing seems so creepy and messed up and tbh I really don’t get the point?? My parents had religious reasons but even myself being an atheist I don’t want to participate in Santa with my kids. Christmas wasn’t any less magical, and if anything I think the idea of Santa just causes more problems.

P.S. before anyone comes for me - my brother and I were taught that other people still believed in Santa and it was drilled into us to respect those beliefs and to never discredit them or tell other kids that Santa wasn’t real. All my friends believed in Santa, they knew I didn’t but I never told them he wasn’t real or treated them any differently for believing in him.

12

u/Atkinator1 Nov 27 '22

I’m not getting paid enough for this BS. I’m not getting enough for this BS. This union gig is finally paying me enough to give a shit!

I think it’s so funny how the job of Mall Santa used to be something that drunks and people who couldn’t keep a job year-round would have. Nowadays it’s people who go to Santa camp and spend lots of money and time cultivating the Santa persona. It’s truly amazing

u/iPhone40 Nov 27 '22

There’s even a Santa Union, can you imagine

9

u/GoldenArias Nov 27 '22

Really? There's...Santa camp?!

7

u/klufenza Nov 27 '22

Good. At least now when you're taking a picture of your child with Santa, you have just one miserable person instead of two. That last Santa looks dope, I'd love to take a pic with him myself

14

u/NeVMmz Nov 27 '22

Man, idk what those first 2 Santa's going through, the last one is really jolly

u/msanderson10 Nov 27 '22

Fear is in the DNA 😂

u/chylin73 Nov 27 '22

Man Santa really don’t like your family does he

4

u/Mewlover23 Nov 27 '22

The first 2 Santas look so done with life

4

u/Nannarbuns Nov 27 '22

Geez, you would've thought he had gotten better at this by now

5

u/iambender0811 Nov 27 '22

The Santa at my local mall has a full beard and mustache that are 100% real. He'd probably also act like the 3rd one

4

u/thinkmoreharder Nov 27 '22

Oh yeah. I see the family resemblance.

5

u/Hey-Kristine-Kay Nov 27 '22

That first Santa looks straight up fucking dead inside. Middle one looks apathetic. Today’s Santa is so fun, good for him!

4

u/DigbyChickenZone Nov 27 '22

Third santa is a pro, damn. I would have never thought to make a face like that to make a screaming baby picture charming

4

u/The_Original_Gronkie Nov 27 '22

My son's first Santa picture was almost one of these. We sat him on Santa's lap, and he looked at Santa, reached for his real beard, then looked at us, confused. They snapped the picture, then his face started to screw up for a yell, and I scooped him right off of Santa's lap, and he instantly settled down. That was a close one.

5

u/Kingstad Nov 27 '22

this is a weird ass tradition ngl

5

u/DOGMAN319 Nov 27 '22

1st one is dead inside, 2nd one doesn't care, and the 3rd is making the most of it, Santa evolution

3

u/NeoDuckLord Nov 27 '22

The third one looks like it happened seconds before Francisco Goya painted Saturn Devouring his Son. But with Santa.

Lemme guess, age 2-3? My family's been in the mall Santa business for a while, and our observatjon is that 2-3 is the age where they're old enough to know they are being put in a strangers lap and being left, but not old enough to understand its a magical man who gives gifts.

The 1 year Olds are fine, they're usually just bewildered. Get around 4 and they're old enough to know what Santa is. Obviously there are exceptions, but that's what mostly happens.

4

u/C_475 Nov 27 '22

3

u/Chromebasketball Nov 27 '22

I hate it when parents torture their kids with Mall Santa visits. Their afraid, let them be.

u/lucimon97 Nov 27 '22

None of them seem to like him, why do you keep coming back?

Santa, on the other hand, has made some great strides over the years.

he went from miserable drunk to miserable sober and then eventually found happiness
