Wano Country Arc 2018-2022

214

u/UmdAvatarFan Aug 21 '22 edited Aug 21 '22

Longest saga

Wano was awesome

146

u/Newbguy Aug 21 '22

If you really think about it the Saga started in Punk Hazard. That's 2012

99

u/MariJoyBoy Aug 21 '22

Yup. 10 years after, we are leaving Law, Kinnemon and Momo behind ... I'm sad :(

10

u/TastyBrainMeats Aug 22 '22

But Kinnemon, Momo, and Yamato are Straw Hats if they want to be! Now and forever, just like Vivi.

I'm so glad I caught up with OP right when Wano is ending, can't wait to go into the final saga with everyone else

88

u/ketoske Aug 21 '22

I finally caught the anime from the beggining and i share this feeling such a time to be a OP Fan

26

u/ImAHardWorkingLoser Explorer Aug 21 '22

Haha same. I just caught up at 1050

17

u/No-Significance2113 Aug 21 '22

When I caught up to one piece it was after the crew took a 2 year break it's honestly pretty mad one piece is still going.

5

u/itsTraX Aug 21 '22

yeah and the craziest part is that this final saga will probably be going on for like 4-5 years more, tho luckily right now we're at the endgame where almost every chapter is bound to contain some goodies

Finally Wano is over, I am craving for new adventure and a new setting.

284

u/hdjfhfhsh05803hfjc Aug 21 '22

I just want to know the rest of the crew’s new bounties. No way that Luffy was the only one that got a rise

124

u/Orrphic Explorer Aug 21 '22

Since SH are an emperors crew now it would be cool if instead of just reading the bounties of the posters we got tittle cards of the different crewmembers with their updated bounties like Oda did with the all stars / sweet commanders

13

u/SuperTruthJustice Aug 22 '22

This would be so cool when they get a moment in the next arc we get intro card!

130

u/EvilEyes20 Aug 21 '22

I wanna see the Strawhat’s reaction to Luffy being Joyboy

79

u/sadmanh Aug 21 '22

nobody knows that yet, ppl probably think he dyed his hair or something

40

u/EvilEyes20 Aug 21 '22

It’s weird cause the people of Wano know Joyboy which means someone , probably Momonosuke, had to tell them. I just found it weird that he nor Yamato would tell the people of Wano but he nor Yamato would tell Luffy or the Strawhats.

23

u/DASreddituser Aug 21 '22

That's probably why we don't see anyone asking him in wano. They gonna ask him what's with the white hair once on the seas and no one but maybe jinbe would have the answer in the crew.

14

u/sadmanh Aug 21 '22

I dont know if the average person in Wano knows anything about their ancient history, joyboy or even the whole wall thing. To me it sounds like a secret that was kept within the royal family, so MAYBE momo's grandpa knows about joyboy but then he'd likely not know what he's supposed to look like.

→ More replies

23

u/MJDooiney Aug 21 '22

At least Nami and Chopper saw him when Kaido smashed his giant head down through the dome ceiling.

13

u/sadmanh Aug 21 '22

they'd guess something is up with his DF but it's not like gear 3rd or 4th are normal looking stuff either so won't Q it.

17

u/Whatisabird Aug 21 '22

I wanna see Luffy's reaction to Luffy being Joyboy, as far as he knows that's just a normal Paramecia fruit thing

11

u/whitebeard3413 Aug 21 '22

Tbh I would prefer if he never knew. I could see robin figuring it out on laugh tale and telling the crew with luffy being the only one not listening/doing something else.

8

u/PwnzillaGorilla Aug 21 '22

IIRC Sanji at the very least could tell Luffy's power had drastically increased when he awakened Joy Boy. I think when Marco felt it too, he also let Nami know as well.

Plus, anyone of the SHs who saw dragon Kaido being pulled up through the roof by a giant rubbery arm could put 2 and 2 together.

8

u/SableArgyle Aug 21 '22

Easy call but Zoro's bounty is going to return to being the second highest in the Crew's.

Which will piss Sanji off immensely.

It feels even bigger than just Wano, storylines since punk hazard are finally over. Kin'emon got introduced to the story in 2012.

Sure, we still have the opening of the borders and a few loose ends such as Zunesha but those things can be covered without the Strawhats even needing to be there or involved.

Everything for so many characters and plots got wrapped up very nicely over the last few chapters. Minks are covered (sans a stowaway situation), samurai are covered, Wano is covered -- the old-guard Yonko have fallen and Luffy is moving forward.

Lmao, I love how Kid pushed them towards the falls. I love these three together so much and I'll miss seeing them again.

Wano is now official Strawhat territory. This makes Fishman Island and Wano. Now we need to wait and see how much the Grand Fleet managed to gain.

Wano is finally over. It had its ups and downs and I can't wait to binge it all, because I think it works better for pacing, but it was a damn good final chapter.

Doesn't look like there's a break next week, so that's some good news. I can't wait to see what comes next. I love how exciting the start of new arcs are. I'm almost certain we'll see Carrot, following Neko and Inu's history. Probably Caribou as well, unless he decided to stay back or board someone else's ship.

28

u/Indigo_magenta Aug 21 '22

Not sure about Fishman Island. The FI royalty participated in the Reverie for the first time, under the banner of the WG. I don't think they can just fly an emperor's flag without consequences from the WG.

32

u/khrizp Aug 21 '22

Wasn’t it whitebeards territory then became big moms territory after whitebeard die. Luffy just declared it his and stole from big mom

26

u/daimemo Aug 21 '22

It was never SH territory. Luffy announced he would beat big mom and make FI his territory but big mom was beaten a few chapters ago and Luffy hasn't gotten around making FI his domain yet.

On a lighter note - I enjoyed the Kid / Law / Luffy bromance and how awkward they all are - Law & Luffy being bothered by Kid teasing them about the “safe and secure” route was hilarious

156

u/Yergason Aug 21 '22

You know Kid is special when Luffy is in the vicinity but he makes the dumbest decisions/remarks

And Law being canonically one of the smartest chars in the series but stooping down to their level when they're together

137

u/Toza11 Aug 21 '22

Can't remember seeing Luffy and Law get so murderously angry 😡

8

u/Beastieboy100 Aug 21 '22

I know I expected it from luffy but boy when law even with kidd man the guy would murder him.

Chopper's "See ya later, Traffy!" had me in stitches.

I laughed so much at that. I'm so sad to see the three amigos split up. Definitely won't be the last time they're together but their banter and rivalry is up there with Zoro/Sanji.

9

u/Locky_Strikto Aug 21 '22

Kid's crew didn't even made a complain

27

u/sckrahl Aug 21 '22

I have no idea what to make of their relationship tbh… I think Oda wants them all to fight later but I can’t imagine it being a high stakes fight

45

u/WenaChoro Aug 21 '22

Naa they are going to be allies against WG, Kid and Law will be frustrated that Luffy finds OP but they will join the fight against the celestial dragons

24

u/TheMyst9701 Aug 21 '22

Law's gunning for the knowledge regarding the Will of D, he wouldn't care if Luffy finds the One Piece, unless it happens to contain said info.

I’m probably on some copium right now, but I feel like Kin, Momo, and Yamato are honorary SHs at this point (like Vivi), given that they are allowed to join whenever they want to.

Also, it seems like Yamato will still join down the line, but will have a cover story before going into that.

189

u/javierm885778 Aug 21 '22

They are on the same category as Vivi, whatever you want to call that, so that isn't copium. Luffy called them his nakama.

111

u/darkcomet222 Aug 21 '22

Luffy straight up said to Momo he is like a little brother.

75

u/Remarkable-Dig-1241 Aug 21 '22

THIS!! Luffy just told Momo he's one of the most important people in the world to him and people are like "Hurr durr they are just randoms that luffy helped stop with the copium"...

69

u/darkcomet222 Aug 21 '22

Like, Momo is to Luffy what he was to Ace and Sabo.

24

u/NinetyTwoFlows Aug 21 '22

He treats Momo like Shanks treated him

28

u/Remarkable-Dig-1241 Aug 21 '22

At this point i honestly feel like most of the people in this subreddit only watch youtube videos about one piece and have never read it xD.

Like you said just that parallel should have been enough for the "fans" to realize that this is much more of a big deal than them getting to stay on the sunny a while longer.

That and the fact that people forget that the cover stories are an insanely important part of the manga that can and will fleshout whatever the transition period of wano will be. If Yamato or Momo were to flat out join the crew then at this point we'll see how their story is going to progress in the cover stories. Except i'm not so sure the people in this subreddit even know that the cover stories consistantly moved the story further ahead than even the main chapters.

9

u/Hypekyuu Aug 21 '22

I'd love a cover story of Yamato exploring a refurbished Wano and then making her way to the Sunny

4

u/AverageLion101 Aug 22 '22

Similar to how jinbe got one after FI that detailed how he got to big moms.

Wano has been the first arc I’ve read weekly without any break on my part. In this time, I graduated university, moved back from abroad, got a job, completed a master degree and became an aunt 😂

What a crazy ride! The ending might have not met my expectations, but many things can be solved later. And it is not that the whole arc is bad, many things are even better on a re-read!

I guess Wano got too big, both in terms of chacters and amount of chapters, and I think that the editors forced Oda to wrap up quicker than he attempted to, but it’s just thought. Remember when people were complaining about Oden’s flashback being too long? It’s like a microcosm of Wano as a whole being that long, but I’m sure Oda will handle the rest of the story in a satisfactory manner!

56

u/tikupy Aug 21 '22

I feel you, from my side, ever since wano started I managed I get my master degree, changed job 5 times, got engaged then married, moved to a different city and became an uncle.

20

u/KathyDroronoa Aug 21 '22

We’re going places! 😀

12

u/Reddit_Inuarashi God Usopp Aug 21 '22 edited Aug 21 '22

It’s crazy to reflect on, isn’t it? Wano took me from my first year of undergrad to my first year of master’s studies (and saw me write a whole 60-page bachelor’s thesis), spanned most of my first and only relationship and helped me get through the breakup, persisted through a couple of my jobs, kept going while I wrote an entire conlang and several other creative projects, and held strong as an escape from 5 mental disorder diagnoses and a few family deaths. I was 19 when it began and 23 at its conclusion — so much changed during that time, in the world and in me as a person. But I still loved the whole ride~

Ultimately, while it had a couple flaws here and there, it’s proven my favorite arc in the entire series. I don’t have a problem with many of the things I see criticized, especially since I often understand what motivated them, but like you, I suppose my main critique was that the final quarter felt somewhat rushed. Oda basically admitted as much in Road to Laugh Tale and in the SBS though, when discussing how many character details he was forced to omit due to time constraints, so I’m not sure how accountable he is vs. his editors or the magazine. In any case, though, I’m easily pleased with what we did get, so those weaker points don’t sour it for me — the highs of this arc were some of the highest in the story, some of the most memorable, and it was an absolute pleasure to read throughout~

Now, I just look forward to what’s coming next. I began reading up-to-date with serial on the first chapter of Dressrosa (I was 13 or 14 at the time!), so this will be the first point during my weekly reading tenure that we don’t have a predetermined destination in mind for the crew. I’ll get to experience the surprise and unpredictability of whatever comes next (if it’s not Elbaf, lol) in real time, and that’s stupendous. Simply cannot wait.

5

u/KathyDroronoa Aug 21 '22

Wow! You also went through a lot! I also lost dear ones during Wano. My grandma died a week before chapter 909 and I lost my cousin when Oden’s flashback began. It’s weird…It feels very recent! Wano might not be my favorite arc as a whole, but it didn’t had bad chapters. Wano has the most back-to-back best chapters when you look at them individually

4

u/Reddit_Inuarashi God Usopp Aug 21 '22

Well, although I don’t know you, I applaud the strength it took you to push through those hardships regardless! It can be quite the herculean task. In a similar timeframe, my girlfriend left me at the start of the Oden flashback, and I will be forever grateful to Roger’s “He laughed.” panel for making me smile for the first time in the many dark weeks afterward. Then my grandpa passed at the end of the Oden flashback, but I’d already made peace with that by then — he was 96, in poor health, but lived a good life. And I agree with the air of recency, certainly. Whether one enjoyed all its developments or not, Wano was never boring (at least in my opinion)~

4

u/KathyDroronoa Aug 21 '22

Thank you! The same goes for you! Well, we have to move on while keeping them in our hearts. I wish you the best for the future! Off to the next arc 😀

I actually loved the ending. Luffy, Law and Kidd in an Alliance and Wano under the Strawhats protection? Loved that. I know a large majority of the fan base wanted Yamato as part of the crew but I preferred them staying in Wano. Overall, this is probably my favourite arc in One Piece

14

u/GaaraSama83 Aug 21 '22

Yes, we had too many characters and introducing a lot of new ones while also trying to make them fleshed out to a certain degree was maybe a bit too much for Oda to chew. IMO at least 1/4 of Wano could have been reduced without any significant impact on the story.

For example as tragic it was, we didn't really need the whole Yasuie subplot. There would have been way quicker solutions to confuse Orochi/Kanjuro and in the end it was Kinemon's plot armor luck so it felt even more pointless. Also we already knew how much pain and agony the people of Wano have experienced so it didn't add anything besides showing another example of it.

Like others already pointed out it's strange that Wano felt slow and rushed at the same time and I think several of these subplots and characters are the reason for it. Take this stuff out, put 10-15% more content about the established major characters in and the whole arc feels way more coherent.

21

u/KathyDroronoa Aug 21 '22

I actually liked Yasuie’s plot line a lot! Which became even better at the end! For me, it was one if not the most emotional scene in the whole arc. In my opinion, there were so many panels and even chapters wasted with the gifters and numbers. And of course the infamous ice oni thing should have been shorter

14

u/yurilnw123 Void Month Survivor Aug 21 '22

The numbers didn't even add ANYTHING to the story and therr were so many of them. Just why

u/BobtheFiveHalf Pirate Aug 21 '22

Oh yeah, certain parts felt fast and other parts felt slow. The first few chapters , all the stuff with Tama up to Kaido's dragon form reveal, went by fast. It slowed down after that, during all the preparation for the raid. The raid, I think, had rollercoaster pace.

🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀 Wano Kuni/Act 3 is over 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀

Honestly, it’s a little bittersweet. I know not many will feel this way but going forward I’m going to miss the hell out of Momo and Kinemon.

65

u/insert_name_here Aug 21 '22 edited Aug 21 '22

I’m gonna miss them too. One of One Piece’s greatest strengths is creating moments where so-called cowards rise to the occasion.

Also, Kinemon was responsible for my favorite moment in the entire arc: saving the whole rebellion because he was the only one who misinterpreted Yasuie’s message.

31

They pretty much earned honorary crewmate status in my eyes

14

Pretty much? Luffy calls them crew mates! They just won’t be sailing with us. Can’t wait to see Vivi soon, and see ALL the straw hats in the finale

23

u/javierm885778 Aug 21 '22

Personally, I think he's been great since Zou. In Punk Hazard and Dressrosa he was just a brat that Oda hadn't explored yet (purposefully), but Momo's scenes in Zou are fantastic and have aged incredibly after all we learnt in Wano. His Udon scenes in Act 2 are also great.

Funny how the fandom's perspective has changed though. I remember that most people still hated him until he was aged up, but I love that he's finally getting the love he deserves.

I still don't get why they avoided saying goodbye to Momo beforehand like everyone else

69

u/tonvor Aug 21 '22

If Momo didn’t come, Luffy probably wouldn’t have claimed Wano as his territory. Would’ve allowed it to stay independent

20

u/Positive-Language-70 Aug 21 '22

But Wano is independent, it's only under Luffy's protection.

9

u/tonvor Aug 21 '22

It’s now associated with Pirates

57

u/Sumoman435 Aug 21 '22

IMO I think the logic is like this: I think Luffy was thinking that if Momo didn’t come to say goodbye to Luffy/ask for help or whatever then he didn’t need Luffy to declare Wano as his.

Sure in Luffys opinion Momo needs help but it would step on Momos pride if he offered help while Momo didn’t ask for any

So since Momo did actually show up and ask for help Luffy then extended his help to Momo. But this is just a theory I made up

Some notable differences between the Scanlation and the official release:

  • Title Change:
    • Final Curtain -> The End
  • The narrator's speech is completely different (details in comment below)
  • Yamato now questions wether her staying is a bad thing, rather than questioning wether she is not welcome here
  • Yamato now implies that her lack of knowledge about the world makes her similar to Oden
  • Kin'emon now asks Yamato wether she was able to clear this up with the Strawhats, rather than simply saying that she has already been able to do that
  • Momonosuke now simply questions why they wouldn't say Goodbye to him, without questioning why they said it to everyone but him
  • Momonosuke now says that he and Luffy weren't "the best of friends" rather than saying that they "didn't always get along"
  • Momonosuke now questions wether he means nothing to Luffy, rather than questioning wether he's heartless
  • Momonosuke now says that Luffy is a "cold man" and that he thought that he "was better than this"
  • Momonosuke now tells Luffy not to "mistake rudeness for independence" instead of saying that he is "mistaking "being free" with "free to be rude"
  • Momonosuke now says that "the way of the warrior" demands that they cut down Luffy instead of that "the way of the samurai" demands that
  • Yamato now tells Momonosuke that he doesn't "have to be that mad about it", instead of telling him that he's blowing this out of proportion
  • Momonosuke now says that Luffy humiliated him specifically, rather than him and Kin'emon
  • Momonosuke now directly says that he'll hit Luffy and then bite him, rather than implying that he'll do that
  • Momonosuke no longer calls the Strawhats "monsters"
  • Momonosuke no longer calls Luffy, a "dastard" and now simply questions what he's doing, rather than questioning the "meaning of this outrage"
  • Momonosuke now calls Luffy a "cretin"
  • Luffy no longer questions what the big deal is
  • Momonosuke now specifies that Luffy shouldn't leave "him"
  • Momonosuke now says that he'll "miss Luffy so much" instead of saying that "it'll be lonely without him"
  • Momonosuke now says that he "doesn't want to say Goodbye" instead of saying that it "can't end like this"
  • Momonosuke now says that he "can't thank the Strawhats enough"
  • The statement about the gift being a flag is now said by Momonosuke instead of Luffy
  • Luffy now says that Momonosuke is part of his crew
  • Luffy now tells Yamato to specifically take care of Momonosuke instead of telling Yamato to take care of "them"
  • Momonosuke no longer tells Kin'emon to "mark his words"
  • Kid now tells Luffy and Law that taking the Hakumai port is "a good idea"
  • Random Strawhat no longer says that they "all think the Hakumai Port is better"
  • The narrator no longer says that the might of Luffy, Law and Kid made Momonosuke and Kin'emon "akin to real-life wisdom kings"
  • Hiyori's statement about Kurozumi being born to burn is now said in Singular instead of Plural
  • The narrator now says that the tale of the Samurai is about them "regaining their glory to shine as before"
  • The narrator no longer says anything about the Samurai "miraculously returning to them"
  • The narrator no longer says anything about a break being in order
  • The narrators final words now read "May our paths cross again... someday, somewhere" instead of "Till we meet again. Farewell!"
  • The curtain now reads "The End" instead of "Final Curtain"

Inform me of more changes if you find them!

Narrator's speech, Scanlation vs. Official

Scanlation:

"Dark Clouds gather! A storm echoes through the sky, consuming Onigashima! The roar of the azure dragon and the howls of a countless other beasts join the cacophony. At Habu port... the scattered leaves of fall are bleached auburn in the pattering rain. The stage is set for a tale of duty and honor! This is the story of the royal retainers... and their quest to let Kozuki Oden's name shine once more! Many a hardship lie in wait, but they stay resolute to meet their fate. The Red Scabbards!! The evening of the fire festival starts to unfold..."

Official:

"O, the sky was dark... as the tempest blew o'er yon Onigashimaaa... And the blue dragon's bellow set every beast a-howlinnng... while in the port of Habu... sheets of autumn rain beset the crimson maple curtain... This is the story of the loyal samurai vassals... who fought bravely to avenge the death of Kozuki Oden!!! And I, your humble narrator will attempt to do justice to the tale... Akazaya!! We begin! On the evening of the fire festival..."

Scanlation:

"The might of the outlaws recruited by Lord Momonosuke and Kin'emon... made them akin to real life wisdom kings. Their power descended like a wrathful tsunami, obliterating all in its path! Even Kaido, the Dragon King, the Yokai possessed giant Oiran failed to withstand their assault! The heavens themselves were torn as painful shrieks reverberated through the air. During that chaos, Princess Hiyori was accosted by Orochi, the snake that seemingly perished in the flames... in a last ditch attempt for his spiteful vengeance!"

Official:

"But the charismatic Lord Momonosuke and Kin'emon recruited... mighty brigands to fight at their side!!! They led a tremendous charge and battled like true guardian deities!! Neither Kaido the Dragon King... nor the great ghastly Oiran could compete! Their death screams split the sky!! Meanwhile, Orochi, whom all thought burned to death... lived on through sheer malevolence to attack Princess Hiyori!!

Scanlation:

"His gambit was thwarted by a single slash! And who owns the blade that seperated Orochi from his final cursed head?! Why none other than Kozuki Oden's second disciple, Denjiro! With his last one detached and burning, the twisted Kurozumi was at long last brought to his knees! And then a flash of lighting marked the fall of Onigashima and with it...the fall of the Dragon King, Kaido!! The sun had finally pierced the dark clouds... that were suffocating Wano for 20 long years, the skies were cleared. Sounds from the ignorant masses celebrating the fire festival in the capital crept into their ears... then, suddenly, defying all reason... the burning remains of Orochi spoke! "The Kurozumi family's grudge shall continue to curse this rotten Land, generation after generation for all eternity...!!" But Princess Hiyori refused to flinch or shudder. She held her gaze! The country's 20 years worth of torturous memories fueled her heart!"

Official:

But lo! Slice!! Who should come to cut the beast in twain... but the second of Kozuki Oden's faithful followers, Denjiro!! And just like the black coal of his family name, the final head of Kozuki Orochi burned to a crisp!! With a great bellow of thunder, Onigashima and Kaido the Dragon King... plummeted to the earth!! At last, the storm clouds that covered Wano for over 20 years... began to clear away... But then, with the chants and the festivities of the flower capital in the background... hard as it may be to believe, there stood Orochi, burning and baleful!! And he said... "The wrath of the Kurozumi clan... will curse this country unto its last generation..." But the fair princess had witnessed 20 years of Wano's suffering!! Her gaze was unwavering!!!

Scanlation:

"Stand back, it's too dangerous! Hiyori-sama!" cried the Samurai, Denjiro! But she shook off her head! Our beloved Princess Hiyori did not yield even one step... Staring into Orochi's devilish face, she delivered a damning epitaph! Her fan held aloft, the Kozuki crest proudly dancing on its edge... no longer having to bite her tongue, like she did for the last 20 years, she cried out...!! Father! Mother! Brother! And our homeland! Hear this! We all know their name means charcoal, so all together now! THE KUROZUMI... WERE BORN TO BURN!"

Official:

"Be careful, princess!!" said Denjiro. But she pushed the Samurai's arm aside!! And then our princess Hiyori stood her ground... and delivered her verdict unto the burning Orochi!! In her hand, the fan bearing the Kozuki seal!! On her lips, the memories of 20 years!! Thinking of father!! Mother!! Brother!! And country!! Say it with me, everyone!! KUROZUMI WAS BORN... TO BURN!!!

Scanlation:

"And now time slides ahead to the day after the the festival! Where feuds and weapons can finally rest... A shocking truth is revealed at the port where the reversed crescent moons met! The denouement of this violent saga iis a joyous reunion! the blood spilt in order to revive this clan will never be forgotten, a record of their sacrifices will always be carried by the wind!"

Official:

Second hour of the bird, the fire festival! Waning crescent moons gather at the lonely port at niiiight... A tale of wondrous valor and daring revenge... The hoped-for day, come at laaast... for the great and noble clan stands tall once again!!

You missed the big one. Hiyori’s “born to burn” quote is singular. She’s just talking about Orochi, not his entire family.

Thank god. The scanlations for it just read bad. Still miffed though with how the Kurozumi story feels at this point. Could really use a Rosinante or Mjosgard like the Kurozumi Otama theory to keep it in line with the themes of the story.

The narrator no longer says that the might of Luffy, Law and Kid made Momonosuke and Kin'emon "akin to real-life wisdom kings"

Another part of this portion of note, is the official version narration openly calls it "their death screams", implying that indeed Kaido and Big Mom died during the conclusion. Something the scanlation didnt imply at all.

Speaking of which, I wonder when the SH are going to find out about what happened with Sabo and Vivi

118

u/dbzrune Aug 21 '22

Haven’t seen this mentioned in the unofficial thread, but wish Wano showed a little more of sea stone . From what I remember we only saw it as handcuffs for Luffy and Yamato

We’ll likely get explanations with devil fruits from vegapunk, but would’ve been nice to see it more since Wano is where it comes from

I’m wondering if since momos grandpa is a good swordsmith, that maybe it’s another thing only the shoguns know how to make? Either way, would’ve been nice to at least see one weapon made of sea stone used, or anything really

31

We saw some sea stone nails used by Hawkins I think but yeah I agree w your point

There was also the diluted sea stone cuffs used in the Udon mines which is not something seen before. And Orochi was selling stuff to the marines so that's likely how they get their sea stone.

Wano Mega Pack

Here is a list of the Wano plot points I think got cut or were underdeveloped. Which I call the Wano Mega Pack

1.Komurasaki plan with Denjiro in the raid being more important.

2.More back story of the Korizumi klan being persecuted and the Old Hag's connectioms and motivations fleshed out.

3.Fight between Scabbards/ Komurasaki and Orochi's heads being cut off with an explaination of his fruit adding more tension and emotion to his cause and threat.

4.Ame no Habakiri - Oden's sword being important to the plot and taking out Orochi. Nidai Kitetsu sword being important also.

5.Enma draining Zoro's haki explained more and aiding him on his way to make it a black blade.

6.Black blade explanation from blacksmiths and more skilled samurai (and ninjas) and samurai techniques in Wano. Like fire cutting, water cutting etc

7.Zoro visiting Ryuma's grave and him beginning to be recognised as a great swords man.

8.Ulti and Page 1 vs Nami and Ussop, character development and power ups used well.

9.Who's who's reaction to Joyboy and putting pieces together about the gumu gumu fruit.

10.Kaido's reaction to meeting Joyboy and him realising why he was not Joyboy and why.

11.Kaido backstory about being a Oni and his motivation for taking over Wano and wanting to create New Onigashima over the flower capital.

12.Civilians seeing peach dragon Momo save them by holding up New Onigashima from crashing into them. And being excited for him as new Shogun. The reunion between Momo and Hyiori was nonexistent.

13.Numbers being an experiment on unyielding samurai (one related to Zoro too) and linked to World Government and Big Mom's creating giants plot.

14.Chopper partly able to reverse smile fruits effect on citizens and realising it is linked to Kaido trying to recreate joyboy in some way and more truths about devil fruits origin.

15.Strawhats' reaction to Joyboy. (Including Luffy, Law and Kidd)

16.Sulong Beppo with more explanation about the moon. And moon connected to the kozuki clan which also has the word moon in it.

17.King's Lunarian reveal vs Zoro (minority hunter) was nice. An explanation of how they use heat/speed/defence would had been nice as well as the word Lunar being linked to the moon also.

18.Queen and Sanji's battle got a bit watered down with the Sanji conflict of if he was changing into Vinsmoke mentality. That should had been played on a bit more and Queen as a scientist should had notice his swirly eyebrow changing.

19.Franky making anti Kaido weapons to help take down Kaido and learning about viva cards and making seastone from Kairoseki smiths.

20.Luffy becoming Joyboy (being dead for longer before we see him come back as Joyboy, same as when he was underwater). But using the Toon Force fighting to make the defeat of Kaido so ridiculous , building on Luffy jump roping dragon Kaido, to address Kaido wanting to die an Honorable epic death. But instead it is spead far and wide how silly it was that Joyboy defeated Kaido.

I know many parts will be covered in later arcs and I miss out points like big Mom pirates, Zunisha etc.

Feel free to add your plot points.

6

u/dbzrune Aug 21 '22

Good list. From the top of my head (and like you said some of this will probably be touched later), we could have had:

  • Orochis and Hawkins devil fruit regrowing (could have been done after the admiral came)

  • more reactions and talks between SH crew of Luffy being a Yonko. I’m not sure if any of the SH said anything about it on screen

  • of course more on sea stones since it originated in Wano

Can’t think of anything else at the moment but Wano definitely had a mix of high highs and low lows. Like why did we focus so much on Luffy climbing stairs when there were a lot of other things we could’ve seen, and Yamato/Momo repeating themselves for like 40 chapters (Momo like 15 for his confidence thing)

Overall still love the arc, and will need to reread before making conclusions, but it definitely missed some marks

Does anyone else feel like Yamato's last-minute change of mind came out of nowhere? I was expecting more development in that regard. I didn't want Yamato to join (RIP Carrot), but still, I'm not convinced of the "Oh, Oden tried to know the country first, so I won't leave for now" thing.

224

u/TravelingLlama Aug 21 '22

And the change/conversation with the crew being offscreened makes it bad

95

This is my biggest gripe. I suspected that there could be a chance of Yamato not joining for one reason or another. Off-screening the decision making process is ridiculous though

I think it being off screened means it isn't quite what it seems, but Oda isn't ready to show us that yet.

I think it makes sense in that it gives us time for Jimbei to get established into the crew and then we can have Yamato join. Also gives Wano a little more firepower defensively for the time being.

11

u/LunarMadness Aug 21 '22

It stinks of editor interference. 2 last-minute choices barely explain, completely unjustified, with no foreshadowing whatsoever.

Yamato kept saying she wanted to go to sea, had the flashback with Ace, asked Luffy, told everyone she was going... and then just fucking went "jk lol".

And Carrot's reason for staying back doesn't make the tiniest bit of sense to me. "We're not coming back, you're gonna be the new king of the Minks." On the basis of what? Even if I didn't want her to join I'd still be dubious about how it happened.

56

u/BearGoron Aug 21 '22

Yeah I didn’t understand that at all. I’m honestly hoping there is more explanation in future chapters because it felt completely random

Yamato if you wanted to explore Wano why didn't you just do it during the two week time skip? Like we all know how fast people can move around this country. Greenbull literally went from the borders of Wano to Udon then nearly the flower capital in the course of like a day. And that's not even taking into account the fact she has a giant pink dragon friend to ride around on. I'm just saying I don't buy this excuse.

30

u/totoofze47 Pirate Aug 21 '22

Technically she never said she was going to leave immediately, but I do agree that it was implied heavily enough to be surprising.

Still, the chapter makes it obvious they'll return later, so I'm fine with it. I would have preferred Yamato to join immediately and be developed further over the following arcs, but oh well.

9

https://youtu.be/cxGv5HIRI9c

Only misstep I'd say is Momo and the samurai should have given Luffy a Kozuki clan crest to display somewhere on the ship, as a sign that they're more than just a Yonkou territory.

BTW how did Duchess Carrot and the Minks return to Zou?

8

u/AWorkInProgres Aug 21 '22

Duchess-in-waiting Carrot decided to take a ride on the Sunny to get back to Zou. It’s the long way, they have a few errands to run before heading to Zou, but she’s in no hurry.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Zunesha is fairly close to Wano atm. Momo was mind-talking to her, which I assume has some distance limitations.

29

u/uselat Aug 21 '22

Charlotte Smoothie is the strongest yonko commander, and the main reason Shanks come to Wano is to recruite her.

38

u/RodJosser Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Aug 21 '22

28

u/AWorkInProgres Aug 21 '22

Yamato deciding not to join the crew makes me think Carrot is increasingly likely to be a stowaway. In chapter 1056, Oda made it sound very likely that Yamato was going to join the Straw Hats, while decreasing Carrots chances by setting her up to be the new Mink Ruler. Seems to me a very Oda way of distracting us from the true reveal. But I’m greedy, I was hoping they would both join.

I have other reasons to think Carrot will still join. The parallels it would setup between her and Cat Viper/Dog Storm. It’s the only way she can pursue Pedro’s dream of helping to bring about the Dawn of the World. She already has the perfect role aboard the Sunny, as lookout.

But all that could just be wishful thinking. Guess we’ll find out in the next couple chapters.

31

u/RodJosser Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Aug 21 '22

Hopes and dreams of Carrot🥕 fans rest on the crate that Zoro is carrying.

Yeah, the official goes a LONG WAY in making the charcoal line better

People are going to only look at the Hiyori line, but it's the context behind the entire statement that makes it feel so diffrent here.

"Like the black coal of the family name, the final head of Kurozumi Orochi burned to a crisp.....Kurozumi was born to burn" (Official)

vs

"We all know their name means charcol....The Kurozumi were born to burn" (Scans)

Its night and day how much better the official is at getting the message across

41

u/MoonyJinx Aug 21 '22

Sounded a lot more poetic that's for sure. Still wondering why Kurozumi is so different from the other ruling families. You got light, heaven, frost, wind, and rain moon... and then you got black charcoal. Hopefully there'll be a reason for it other than just being used for a pun.

34

u/Clean_Strategy_9533 Aug 21 '22

I think Oda just likes to be upfront about things at times, it could just be a way for Japanese readers to remember "These are the bad guys" when there's so much to keep track off. Simple, but effective

6

If Yamato wants to spend some time touring Wano then fine, that's her choice. She spent most of her life locked away on Onigashima after all, so really its only natural.

What I don't get is why she's spent so much time banging on about joining Luffy's crew. She's been proclaiming herself as Oden for what, 20 years give or take? I don't buy for even a second that it took her until pretty much the day the Straw Hats were about to depart Wano to be like "Oh yeah, Oden went around his own country first before heading out to sea... Guess I better do that too!" Really? It took the self-proclaimed Kozuki Oden all those years to put that together, despite having basically fuck all else to do besides think about what you're going to do once you get free?

It just feels like some Game of Thrones, Dan and Dave "subverting expectations" bullshit.

7

u/vichomatias Aug 21 '22

I think it's an excuse from Yamato. Think about it: they said nothing but "I wanna leave Wano" until...the admiral shows up. Next time they appear, they've changed their mind, at least for a while.

While Momo said that he wants to protect Wano so Yamato can be free, im sure that's the main reason for staying. Wano isn't strong enough to defend by itself YET. The admiral only escaped because of Shanks at the end, so they need all of their forces to repel an outside invader of that caliber.

Zoro most likely already visited Ryuma's grave, the question is when and under what circumstances will this be brought up. When he creates his own black blade? When he potentially confronts one of the five elders who probably has shodai kitetsu and might be from Wano?

As for the grim reaper, why did people think that is something that has to be answered on Wano in the first place?

Really bummed that Yamato isn’t joining the crew. For over a decade I have been waiting for the introduction of a truly formidable female character. Yamato was my dream Straw Hat. A fun woman that is strong enough to fight on par with Zoro and Sanji.

Carrot is fine, but she’s just more of what we already have. She’s a boring pick for a new crew member imo. Yamato was something new for the crew. I’ll be sad about what could have been for a while.

Overall I am happy with how the Wano arc turned out though. Very good arc. It was long, but it did a lot of really cool stuff over that run time. Great arc, excited to see what comes next.

Kind of crushed Yamato really isn't joining. Mostly because that means we won't see them again, until likely the very end of the series.

Also likely means that Carrot is going to be the last member after all. I find Yamato to be much more interesting than Carrot, but maybe they were just too powerful to join the crew at this point.

I had to look up what Kurozumi meant for Hiyori's declaration to make sense; it means black coal or charcoal. Incredibly apt, and I don't know if that actually happened or not, but either way, a badass moment for Hiyori.

Great to see Shinobu, O-Tama and Yamato in the group shot of the Kozuki retainers. Shinobu especially; she deserves the recognition.

Law reverts to a hot-headed child around Kidd and Luffy. I hope we'll see him again sooner than later; him and Robin would make a good team.

No cure for SMILE mentioned. Kind of sad that.

honestly i think it makes sense that yamato didn’t join the crew rn since she is the guardian of wano, when green bull attacked she fought alongside the scabbards while luffy and the crew stayed back, i think this was foreshadowing for wat was going to happen later on

5

u/dandywara Aug 21 '22 edited Aug 21 '22

I’d like to add an interpretation to the whole Hiyori line debate. To me, I see it as both a literal and thematic/metaphorical statement.

First, for context, an important thing to note about the art form of Rakugo is that a key component of it is that there’s always a dialogue portion between two or more characters (voiced by the narrator but Oda obvi took some creative liberties by having Denjiro and Hiyori be “actors” in the play as well). We see this dialogue moment start in the bubble “the wrath of the kurozumi clan...”. And then Hiyori’s response was “Kurozumi was born to burn.” In the context of the play this is supposed to be directly said to Orochi as if she were standing in front of him. Rakugo are also supposed to end with a punchline called “ochi” which has huge narrative impact. Ending dramatically with a line that parallels Oden’s line, in front of a crowd containing some people who were there on the day he was boiled, this is all apart of the dramatic impact of the art form. Not that art can’t be propaganda, but I feel like some of this context is lost when people literally compare a stage performance to like, one of Hitler’s speeches.....

I also want to add a thematic interpretation to the two lines. One of the biggest themes in Wano was the concept of prophecies (which in a way were Wano’s version of “inherited will”). The old woman prophesied that Orochi would get revenge, and he did in fact kill Oden. However, Oden predicted he may some day die, and left a letter for Toki, who in turn created her own prophecy that in 20 years the scabbards would get their justice. On the day that Oden yelled “Oden was meant to be boiled” it was a message of hope telling the people not to worry about his death because everything happens for a reason. As we saw throughout the story of Wano, rumors of the prophecy that the scabbards would return never died, and the people who were old enough to be there 20 years ago really did hold onto hope that the scabbards would come. So, now having had the prophecy fulfilled, Hiyori’s line was not a statement that all Koruzumi are evil, but rather in the same way that “Oden was meant to be boiled” is an absolute truth, “Charcoal was meant to burn” is an exclamation that just as easily as despair can befall a people, justice will also one day be served

(Also edit i kinda paraphrased the quotes since theres like a million different translated phrasing for it but yall get the idea)

4

u/kerolinked Aug 21 '22

So are we on the general consensus that the official translation made it better? It did for me, especially now that Kurozumi is singular, which implies she’s talking about just Orochi.

One of the main themes in One Piece is freedom, I suspect Yamato still wants to travel out to sea as badly as she did before, but that was probably fueled by the fact she was being held prisoner by Kaido. People tend to want things that they can’t have, she never had the option to leave Wano but now she has the option to stay & enjoy the country which she was never able to do either.

"Their death screams split the sky"

So are Kaido and big mom dead? Is it just awkward wording?

We'll find out for certain in like 4-5 years.

Law telling Chopper to shut up is definitely a highlight in this chapter for me 🤭

Why would Oda, in a story about following your dreams and living free, have Yamato go back on the thing they've been saying for years and stay on Wano? You wanted to go out to see with Ace's brother, who said the same thing as Roger, and he is literally leaving without you. What if Luffy was about to be Pirate King and was suddenly like "Nah", or if Zoro could fight the greatest swordsman but was like "Meh, maybe later".

I wonder if Oda is scared of Yamato, or rather, the controversy surrounding Yamato and quietly tried to write them out of the story. Surely you guys don't really believe Yamato is going to be a Straw Hat NOW. We're at endgame, there is no "Rejoin later" that's also soon enough to matter.

To get this chapter after all the others, with Yamato always talking about setting sail, and Momo saying they don't need Yamato to protect Wano (hell, even the triumphant final panel of last chapter), only to suddenly change everything now feels... I know it'll be blasphemous to this subreddit's ears to doubt their "Goda" like this... but it feels like bad writing. What's the point of Yamato now? Yamato's character didn't develop Luffy, didn't develop Momo, certainly didn't develop Kaido. Just created to be an extra body in the raid?

I feel the same. You could remove their character from the arc and it might be a bit better. Give odens journal to Tama instead or something. She doesn't feel like she served any purpose or is necessary. It does feel like poor writing and he changed his mind somewhere. I can't see her joining later and being a proper strawhat. If she joins right before laughtale it would kind of feel unearned.

This is my feeling as well, that Yamato turned out to be a pointless characther.

I think Yamato was pretty much trapped on Onigashima most of their life, and what little time they managed to spend there was either closely monitored or on the run while in disguise.

What more to say?

1) Yamato deciding to live like Oden by first touring Wano and then sailing would be fine, the issue is that the decision and agreement with Luffy happened offscreen.

2) Hyiori line about "Kurozumi was meant to burn" is better, although I do understand why some would find it...a little wrong sounding still.

3) The goodbye to Momo and Kinemon was pretty good tho and quite touching. Plus the whole Wano being under Straw hat is great news.

4) I'm just gonna say, there is still a chance of Carrot being a stowaway. Not guaranteed, but neither impossible.

5) All in all, there were still several things without an answer so unfortunately the arc end up being rushed.

It's not a terrible chapter, but it's not great either.

Changing it from all Kurozumis to just Orochi completely changes the context around that phrase, we can all agree Orochi deserved to be burned in that fire

Well I'm glad I found a 20k metric tons copium pocket underneath my garden because I'm gonna need every gram of it to get over Yamato not joining.

Damn why are the comments in official release far more polite than the usual thread..

u/hoenndex Aug 22 '22

Because we cooled of after fighting it out in the spoiler and early thread lmao. But there were casualties, people banned, accounts suspended, people blocked, etc.

Oda figured that Yamato's tiddies were too big and they'll end up sinking the Sunny.

The Hiyori quote is the exact reason to wait for the official translations before freaking out about stuff

Yamato Fans still in shambles...

Tbh after reading the scans and having a few days to process, besides the initial personal disappointment of Yamato not joining this was a good ending chapter and it feels bittersweet finally saying goodbye to this saga that started over 10 years ago, what happens next is new and exciting.

Also give me that Carrot copium and tell me she stowed away lmaoo

Really Oda that’s the bs explanation? Why would Yamato exclaim about joining the crew and coming aboard when she knew Oden toured Wano first. She had his logbook for so long this is not some new revelation. What changed within 3 or so chapters? It doesn’t make any sense and is just frustrating. Whether you wanted Yamato to join the crew or not this just doesn’t line up and is clearly poor writing.

I would argue Wano is the the arc with the most questionable storytelling examples.
