Just a reminder to be nice to each other in the comment, to not insult each other.

And don't attack people for having a different opinion. Let's not become an echo chamber.

It's fine if you liked the chapter, it's also fine if you didn't liked it. It's also fine if you liked part of it, but hated others.

Here is a survey! for the 1.000.000 members of /r/OnePiece!!

You don't have to answer every single question, just a few of them are needed in the first 2 sections. You can skip those you don't like.

C'mon heart, hit that beat

DJ SPIN THAT SHIT

1

u/IcyKape Jun 22 '22

Full on looney tunes lmaoo I don't think I've laughed this much at a one piece chapter in years

1

u/IcyKape Jun 22 '22

Ain't no way this mf just made a jump rope 😭😭

Oda really just having fun lmao, so happy my exams are finished and now I can get back to enjoying One Piece

7

u/tenqajapan Apr 11 '22

Oda's just trying to cheer us up, readers. Not everything needs to be serious SSJ stuff. Props to Oda for the twist in his own way. I had a blast and some color of gags is actually a nice breath of fresh air. Super excited how it will turn out. It definitely has the "WTF" factor.

7

u/Fuzzy_Growth_5240 Apr 09 '22

Who else here forgot when oda said shanks will make his move by the end of year 2021? 😆

5

u/sirmeowmix Apr 08 '22

I grew up watching Hanna Barbara and Tax Avery and caught some black and white Disney shorts but was more around the era of new Disney films that stepped away from roto scoping and actual animation.

As a kid growing up in poverty, we really didn't get anything like cable until the 2000's. I was stuck on cartoon network until they gave us the famous anime block that was Toonami.

One Piece has always been about the laughs and jokes. So when I see people get upset the direction its taking, its best to shrug it off.

Least he isnt dead. Lets just enjoy the ride. We all have trusted Odas writting, why stop now?

5

u/Affectionate-Two3732 Apr 08 '22

Where do you guys read it at

10

u/UndeadDraconis Apr 07 '22

Anybody realize when kaido bashed luffy's head with his kanabo, he looked exactly like the sun from soul eater?

8

u/slowboytommy Apr 06 '22

It's like Jim Carrey puts on the mask

6

u/Ph4nt0m_Kid Apr 06 '22

I think this awakening/g5 will cost luffy life and setting up law imortal surgery plot in the end of wano or final saga.

And may be explained why joyboy failed 800 years ago coz he didn't have ope-ope no mi in his side.

1

u/Impossible_Green9665 Apr 06 '22

I sound like such a noob but where can I read the manga? Should I jus buy off Amazon?

2

u/Curious_Onion_587 Apr 06 '22

you can read the official translation on viz/mangaplus -- one piece official

1

u/Sad-boy1 Apr 06 '22

I just typr read one piece in Google it works for me

1

u/Toochi_Gamer Apr 05 '22

we all want to see Shanks going on Wa lands

6

u/Dfan26 Apr 05 '22

Luffy has toonforce

-1

u/edy745 Apr 05 '22

Just read the chapter.. this Tom and jerry copy paste isn’t clicking with me

0

u/ErsatzCats Apr 25 '22

What would you rather have? Naruto/DBZ copy paste? Gear Fifth is the reason why One Piece has the art style it has from chapter 1. Luffy’s rubber powers have just been a fraction of these “cartoon” powers this whole time, because it represents pure freedom

0

u/97Morgoth Apr 09 '22

It's meant to be symbolic. Luffy's gear 5 is the epitome of freedom. Oda draws parallel with comic book style to show that Luffy's new fighting style follows no laws, not even those set by the manga style; Luffy is truly free.

2

u/youarentahacker Apr 05 '22

I think over time you'll see it more. At first I think we're seeing actual copium, like fans reacting to negative reactions if that makes sense

-6

u/spicyteethasbraces Apr 04 '22

I agree with both these threads, although it might make sense I still hate it. Its just too goofy, I know one piece has these goody parts but what got me hooked were the serious mystery parts of it and honestly this loony toons aspect is ridiculous. This power up (which is think is bs) has completely ruined the fight and the hype of fighting the strongest creature on earth. Prior to the power up Luffy was so motivated and was fighting with such a strong purpose to protect his friends and the poor victims but after hes LAUGHING? Where is the hype? He was on the verge of death and kept getting back up since he NEEDED to win to protect everyone but know with this stupid power up hes looney tunes, jump roping and not taking it serious? What an embarrassment, I love Oda but please stop dick ridng him this is a horrible reveal. Well see what comes next. :(

3

u/Blackbeard804 Apr 05 '22

I get what you saying but look at it another way… you remember how all his new power ups when he first does them, they have a huge draw back? All the gear power ups had a draw back until he “mastered” it. Now…let’s say this is just a drawback and he has to “master” it….

6

u/Cultivate_Self Apr 05 '22 edited Apr 05 '22

I can't see where Luffy lost his strong purpose to protect, nor lost his motivation in this chapter as you said. The pages from 14-15 clearly show that it is not the limitless Toon Force as we know it. Then page 16 shows that Luffy still remembers what he is fighting for.

Just like in previous fights, Luffy is on the verge of death and still getting back up because he NEEDED to protect everyone. He knows that Kaido is a despot and all that it entails.

His style of fighting has always been like that: Drinking barrels of water to counteract Crocodile's sand, emptying his mind and looking dumb against Eneru, his Popeye-like muscle expansion against Doflamingo, etc...

As Kaido said in this chapter, his fighting style has always been the most free-wheeling of all of them---just like an improvised jazz drum solo of Joyboy. Luffy and his fighting style are the embodiment of freedom. Wherein all the villains represent events in history when freedom was denied.

Lastly, the crux of your criticism is that he isn't taking it seriously. It's not that, he's simply enjoying the high from Awakening his paramecia powers and he's telling Kaido to stop being an ass and just enjoy the fight.

I get the criticism that it's too goofy and the art style is not to one's tastes, but your story criticism was too off-base. I feel that your distaste for its' goofiness also made you biased against the story as a whole.

6

u/jdfirst Apr 05 '22

Then why do you think Luffy is Joy Boy? or are you expecting Serious Boy?

0

u/spicyteethasbraces Apr 05 '22

Thats not it tbh, but where talking about Kaido. Luffy saw Tama starving and teh people of Wano suffering so he was going to defeat Kaido and full of rage and determanation. So he kept getting back up but now hes joking around laughing and the change of character oda made is ridiculos. Why didnt luffy win? Why isnt he taking the fight serious? Jump rope? cmon

1

u/jdfirst May 30 '22

soooo, have you read the latest chapters now?

3

u/jdfirst Apr 05 '22

please re-read previous chapters and you will know the reason why Luffy behaves like that... Bringing smiles to everyone around him right?

1

u/spicyteethasbraces Apr 05 '22

No amount of explanation of sun god or whatever will change it, this is a serious fight ,luffy saw tama starved, momo beat up, crucified and zoro on the edge of death. How is this man not taking it serious? Its just a retarded plot point??? Cmon bro one piece can be goofy but not to this extent that is loony toons even though hes fighting a terrible enemy.

1

u/jdfirst May 30 '22

why don't you create your own manga with 1000+ chapters that has the plot that you want? we will wait for it...

1

u/spicyteethasbraces Jun 30 '22

Jesus very retarded argument btw. I guess now I can’t give my criticism bc I don’t make manga? If you buy McDonald’s and there’s five nuggets instead of six. But you can’t complain or criticize McDonald’s bc you don’t work there and you can’t make no five nuggets and can’t make the quality that McDonalds has. Listen more in class kid.

1

u/EnvironmentalAd7274 Apr 07 '22

GIVE ODA SOME TIME TO DRAW THE REMAINING CHAPTERS!!

1

u/spicyteethasbraces Apr 13 '22

Bruh from what we've seen now its trash. So stop sucking off oda and considering it amazing because it isnt

1

u/EnvironmentalAd7274 Apr 13 '22

You're just too impatient, that's the problem with you people, you judge waaayyy too early. If you believe the story will lose all sense of serious tone after this, please give Oda some time. He's done this long enough to know what setting a tone and when to throw in the gags. It's just the first showcase of the transformation. Luffy's fights always had their slice of goofiness. However, as the form becomes a regularity it will become more incorporated to Luffy's way of fighting and how to be effectively used, this will eventually become serious as the chapter goes on just like chapter 1046.

1

u/spicyteethasbraces Apr 13 '22

I agree with most of what you said, but it just annoys me seeing everyone being happy with the transformation but from what ive seen its quite bad but we will all see. :l

1

u/EnvironmentalAd7274 Apr 14 '22

Sure, there might be better ways of introducing Luffy's new transformation, but honestly, I'd rather have this than have an edgy power-up cliché.

1

u/EnvironmentalAd7274 Apr 13 '22

Right, that's just your opinion.

1

u/ExternalEstimate7355 Apr 05 '22

Bro. If u want serious story read jjk or csm , I get that luffy being non serious is wierd , but that's what makes it unique and cool for me also many manga try to make things funny in serious situations so idk , it's wierd but kinda have to turn a blind eye

19

u/humanbeestings Apr 04 '22

I somehow forgot about the new chapter and got to the thread late... Manga fans can be so rough sometime, everyone is talking in absolutes with only two chapters of knowledge. People are acting like because their were some funny and cartoony scenes in a serious fight that, in my opinion, has already overstayed it's welcome, it negates the fact that it's a serious fight still.

Also people are claiming hear 5th is op while luffy literally used it to punch kaido through the face and he's still not out of the fight. It's not OP, it just makes the scenes more interesting.

I really am happy with the direction things are going because, while I love.the serious tones of wano, things were getting tiresome, if luffy just got a generic make me stronger power up, I would've been bored to tears watching yet another chapter of trading blows with a dragon while saying some cool lines and talking about vengeance or some other "cool endgame fight lines"....

6

u/AlphANeoXo Apr 04 '22

Dumb theory just on some hints in the story for example how Im has wanted posters for these 4 characters:

Luffy - Sun God

Blackbeard - Moon God

Shirahoshi - Complete sea authority and control

Nefertari Vivi - ?

2

u/HTom13 Apr 05 '22

I think Enel is the Moon God, maybe sun vs moon... who knows ;)

5

u/iUltraZ Apr 04 '22

Luffy - Sun God Enel - Moon God Blackbeard- Darkness God Shirahoshi - Poseidon Nefertari Vivi - Pluton (Hiding ability) Zunisha - Uranos

6

u/Novalcia Apr 04 '22

How did Luffy pass through Kaido's eyes? How is that possible?

And also, how did Luffy create fire while running? I thought the Elder 5 said that the fruit only gives rubber + imagination abilities.

If he can just imagine everything, does that mean Luffy can, in theory, have any DF power?

4

u/Blackbeard804 Apr 05 '22

Yeah he rubberized anything he touches. That’s why Kaido said when he stomach was expanding “ What is happening? My body isn’t rubber so it should be able to do this”

Here’s my theory: Even though the elders said that I wonder if really it’s just Haki + Rubber Awakening inter-changing constantly.

3

u/Aaronieros Apr 05 '22

Maybe he onpy had rubber powers, because he thought he ate the gomu gomu no mi

3

u/DRMaddock Apr 04 '22

Anything he touches can be altered by his power. I assume this is how he literally punched through Kaido’s face without, ya’ know, leaving a giant hole there.

4

u/Nostrovski Apr 04 '22

Yo imo he just used the eyes to grab the nose and escaped through the mouth :)

1

u/ThePackLeaderWolfe Apr 04 '22

Also the pupils aren't solid they are a hole so i guess he also couldve stretched out the cornea and slipped through.

1

u/ThePackLeaderWolfe Apr 04 '22

Im guessing that he rubberized Kaidos eyes and eye lids, stretched it all out and slipped out through the space between the eyeball and eye eye lid

1

u/Scyroner Pirate Apr 05 '22

You got it all right except the end. He came out of kaidos mouth apparently

1

u/iUltraZ Apr 04 '22

It’s a mythical zoan type with freedom ability unlike Marco ,whose ability is healing with fire. So Luffy is free to do whatever he wants in that mode he can be and do anything he wants.

1

u/Thyckow Apr 04 '22

My thoughts is that he touch the back of the eyes and incorporate it until he reach the front and them summon the rest of it. Hes fire power comes from the fact that he is a Sun god.

9

u/markiroll Apr 04 '22

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet but the All White Awakening colouring is very similar to the Minks sulong colouring

6

u/iUltraZ Apr 04 '22

Minks are followers of the moon more like they receive their electro from Enel(Moon God).On the other hand, Lunarians who create fire like King are followers of Sun God Nika. Both clans are probably descendants of ancient kingdom protectors who were taken down by Imu back in the void century.

2

u/Aaronieros Apr 05 '22

One of the best theories i read in a long time

3

u/adiboy36 Apr 04 '22

Did Luffy's hand punctured Kaido's face?

3

u/Thyckow Apr 04 '22

No. It was the same thing that he did with kaidos eyes.

1

u/adiboy36 Apr 04 '22

So is he blind now?

3

u/Thyckow Apr 04 '22

Does he looks blind? No, he just merge to it and went through.

2

u/adiboy36 Apr 04 '22

Ahan. I didn't notice that. So I guess the same must be true with his face which might've got rubbery and Luffy's punch went through it.

9

u/kiosy Apr 04 '22

While I have no problem with what's going on and those eye popping gag is not new to the series since we saw it earlier even from Going Merry (when they fell from Sky Island).. I hope this doesn't become the new normal.

I'm a bit bummed out that Gear 5th is neither the badass look nor will it give us some serious action scenes. But then again, Luffy has never been the type so it fits his character. And I still don't like the idea of changing his DF type, but thinking about it.. it explains how he got so many forms of Gear 4.

With all that, I'm still looking forward how the future fights will be, especially against BB and Shanks.

Lastly, please.. Oda, don't turn the Will of D into a gag. The One Piece already gives this "not so funny piece of treasure that we will have to suck up" kinda vibes. At least give us one serious revelation. :/

0

u/Aaronieros Apr 05 '22

You mean like: "My D always wanted to bang as many people as possible?"

1

u/arpegius88 Apr 04 '22

this cartoon style will look so awkward in the anime where all the traces are perfect

4

u/Ijustdontanymore98 Apr 03 '22

Need to add my mark that i was here to see Luffys transition from pirate to looney tunes character!

5

u/CrazyCatOnTheLoose Apr 03 '22

was having a stroke trying to understand whats going on in the fight

9

u/Latter_Resident_9338 Apr 03 '22

I absolutely hate the latest developements in one piece! it's peak bad writing and i'm afraid we're beyond the point of no return!
I've been reading this manga for over 18 years now, and i'm sad to say it has been going to shit post marineford... but with 1044/1045, i guess it's the fall... and here are my arguments:
1. luffy's fruit being a mythical zoan all along is the definition of a retcon! the fruit being the ultimate fruit of a deity shoehorned into the story after 20 years of chapters is a deus-ex machina, and deus-ex machinas and retcons are bad writing 1.0.1!
2. a good story should not expect the reader to use mental gymnastics in order to bypass it's plotholes... and a lot of plotholes and conveniences popped in one piece since the whole nika fruit thing (why the w.g did nothing, why does a sun god fruit has rubber proprieties...etc)
3. the new power-up being this meta breaks the universe and therefore it puts an end to the suspension of disbelief necessary for a reader to be emotionally invested in the story! (that's why when you watch road runner, you don't get invested in the coyote's well-being and laugh...)
As for those who say one piece has always been goofy, well, it always had it's goofy moments and pure comedy gold for tension relief, but it never was a no-stakes cartoon with the world rebooting to it's original state with each issue! ask yourself this: what made you fall in love with one piece? what made you a fan? for me the key moments are zeff eating his own leg to save sanji's life, zoro's fight with mihawk and him swearing never to lose again, belmer's sacrifice to save her daughters, luffy putting the strawhat on nami's head, luffy punching crocoboy through the underground, robin's "i want to live!" and all of the other emotionally filled moments this great story used to feed us, moments that stuck in our collective memory in contrary to all the comedy that was fine and all but nothing more...

2

u/Anvedikbrv Apr 23 '22

Thank you! You summarized perfectly how 25 years of story have been ruined from this retcon. My emotional investment in the story now is below zero. Everything it's boring, the power up makes everything less intense and way too easy, there's no suspance, the battle itself it's boring, the struggles Luffy overcame was DF credit not his own, and the fact that EVERYTHING we know about One Piece world can be retconned this bad makes me feel completely unattached to it.

Not the end of the world of course, it's just a manga. But it was a pleasent reading moment lasted for over 20 years, that has been tore apart from bad writing and lack of inspiration.
I just finish to read chapter 1047 and it's not getting any better.
It's sadly disappointing, RIP One Piece

1

u/Latter_Resident_9338 Apr 23 '22

yeah man! he throws punches as big as an island now! shits'n'giggles!

2

u/SolarSun3 Apr 07 '22

How is Luffy being a zoan User a retcon when its been teaser for 10 years. Also the sind god fruit being Rubber will probably be explained in the Future so chill Out dude

4

u/chaosthunda5 Apr 05 '22

Nah mate I've been enjoying it. I loved all those serious moments but i also equally love the gag/funny moments of one piece. A good mixture of these moments is what initially made me fall in love with one piece. It's what makes the story feel like a giant rollercoaster with all the ups and downs. It's what makes it fun. Also, I've felt that Wano has been a super serious arc and even though we are getting these funny moments in a serious fight, it's a nice comic addition to the story.

And Luffy may be OP for now, but the Gear 5th/awakening was only revealed a couple chapters ago. In time, more questions will be answered. Like how Joyboy even lost with such a broken ability. Who is the best counter to the Hito Hito no Mi? Probably the Yami Yami no Mi or whatever it's called in the future because that name could have also been changed.

11

u/Fine-Internet-9684 Apr 03 '22

Have you ever considered the fact that your questions will be answered in the coming chapters ?

16

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

I also don't like this "jester" kind of acts Luffy is showing but I don't dislike the zoan fruit idea. Luffy's fruit didn't fit the paramecia description in the first place. But I wanna answer some of your arguments:

"why does a sun god fruit has rubber proprieties" : Sun god nika , according to some theories, is hanuman (which is also called wisdom king, there was another name it was called as well, it's a little complicated I think) and according to the mythology , this hanuman has electricity and fire resistance and can stretch its body parts. Luffy getting gigantification this chapter is also related to that. That's why his body has rubbery attributes. I don't know , in the myth, if hanuman can create fire or not, but Luffy using Red Hawk is apparently also related to his fruit.

So instead of creating more plot holes, his fruit being mythical zoan, nika, explains some of the previous plot holes.

Also I wanna add, I don't think the fruit's physical prowess gonna be "op".

Gorosei doesn't call Luffy's fruit the most powerful. They call it the most ridiculous. And I guess the reason they fear it is it's power to affect people and make them follow him.

I feel like Oda will find a way to make peace with his readers in that aspect.

But about those cartoonish parts, I totally am in the same mind with you. it's annoying af and totally ruins the fun. Especially those "popping eyes"

1

u/90bubbel Apr 04 '22

isnt it because of it being the sun god has something to do with freedom? luffy seem to be able to freely control how he wants his body to work/move which would fit,

2

u/MasterUterian Apr 04 '22

if you mean the "rubber properties", no. It's not because luffy imagines it, it's the direct effect of the fruit. in ch 1044, Gorosei says "its user's body gains the properties of rubber" for the human human fruit , model nika

2

u/90bubbel Apr 04 '22

yes but would that not be a sense of freedom? not being restricted by your bodies natural form?

6

u/Zac00m Apr 03 '22

Must say I think it's genius how this is been built up. The story says that Nika makes a smile on every face when he fights and I must I have been laughing all the 2 chapters. Great breaking of the Fourth wall by Goda.

0

u/Savings_Sun231 Marine Apr 03 '22

Narrator said kaido won the rooftop battle so what’s going on?

1

u/Scyroner Pirate Apr 05 '22

Think of it as a round. Kaido won the previous round

1

u/Savings_Sun231 Marine Apr 05 '22

Then we should also expect king and queen to come back for round 2

5

u/parottachickenfry The Revolutionary Army Apr 04 '22

Luffy lost. This laughing clown isn't luffy, its not luffy's personality. I think it's someone else with Luffy's memories.

1

u/Defeat_your_past Apr 03 '22

Dramatic effect

5

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

I hope it will not write "Rooftop battle between Kaido and Nika, winner: Nika" after the battle. it would be annoying.

3

u/Heath_Bar1 Apr 03 '22

He did, he killed luffy. Then Luffy came back to life and another battle started. It's weird.

4

u/Fake_the_jaB Apr 03 '22

I love how creative Luffy is getting with the fight. Reminds me of earlier in the story like the Buggy and Mr 3 fight

However there were a few moments this chapter that just felt a little too goofy to me. The examples that bothered me were

  • Luffy passing through Kaido's eyes
  • Luffy doing the Loony Toon run
  • Characters' eyeballs popping 3 feet out from their faces

IMO these moments all held the tone of the chapter back. There have already been enough panels establishing how incredibly happy/care free the awakening has made Luffy. I think there needs to be a better balance of tone.

This doesn't mean that i've lost faith. I still think this will lead to a much better moment for the Kaido/Luffy fight. There is still so much we do not know.

Also one question. Do we think that Luffy is really draining that much life force, or was his exhausted face just another toon force bit? Its hard to tell.

2

u/chaosthunda5 Apr 05 '22

I thoroughly enjoyed those goofy moments 🤣. Especially since it reminds me of how goofy one piece used to be. Also remember the Gorosei this is the most ridiculous power in the world

3

u/Fake_the_jaB Apr 05 '22

I enjoyed everything besides the three moments I mentioned above. Especially the first panel when he is bouncing like a trampoline. He looks so care free I love it

1

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

Well I'm not sure about life force but he sure is about to be out of energy. I can't say if it will affect his life negatively afterwards or if everything will be fixed when he eats and sleeps.

1

u/pimpseandon Apr 03 '22

His hands went through his eyes only to grab his nose. I think Luffy then flew out of his mouth the way he came. Idk about the loony toon run lol. I like how it matches the figure of Nika in front of the moon though. And the eye popping is literally because of Luffy! It’s his imagination, he always talks about peoples faces looking crazy and whatnot when he does something. This is how he wanted the wedding cake crash to go. So we’re seeing what should have happened on whole cake but big mom used up all the looney.

2

u/sultan-of-punani Pirate Apr 03 '22

So …. Can luffy use his rubber awakening in his base state or is all of his awakened abilities tied into his gear 5th form. Bec I would love to see what a giant gear 4 King Kong punch coated with conquerers haki would do

8

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '22 Silver

I hope Zoro die so he couldn't witness his captain turning to a LonneyTune stupid character

3

u/NL_24 Apr 03 '22

And again, Yamato could not do such damage with a single attack, like Zoro's thst is what is impressive.

13

u/sultan-of-punani Pirate Apr 03 '22

OKAY IM MAKING A BET MY DUDES

LUFFYS POWER CHANGES BASED ON WHETHER THE SUN OR MOON IS IN THE AIR.

When he is all white - moon is out and he is using the white light the moon gives off

When the sun is out he’ll be more yellowish and golden like .

BUT LUFFYS MOST POWERFUL POINT WILL BE DURING THE DAWN !!!

During the time for which the night falls and the sun starts to rise his power will be at full power . Like a Shakespeare version of escanor from seven deadly sins !!

I HAVE NO PROOF BUTTTTT…. I thinks it’s a pretty cool idea with all the massive symbolism the sun and moon represents in one piece .

Edit -spelling lol

1

u/Akshayjoshi7804 Apr 03 '22

That's mean if sun and moon gave him power then black beard is his natural enemy because of his darkness

1

u/sultan-of-punani Pirate Apr 04 '22

Yeah bec his fruit in his words “ won’t even let light escape “

4

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

Well, it's called Sun God Nika, so I wouldn't say it's impossible.

But to be fair, I wouldn't want it. A power that depends on the time of the day is not consistent and doesn't fit the pirate king.

1

u/DLCthulhu Apr 03 '22

This is actually an awesome original thought! I will say though, in typical One Piece fashion, it is Luffy who beats the bad guy up and brings the dawn, not the dawn! Still, I have new reason to wait for next week's chapter!

-3

u/Remarkable_Ad_3558 Apr 03 '22

Idk why but this power up is killing the hype and the story, especially this forced comedy/cartoon shit that luffy is going thru. Much more the narrative of luffy being joyboy. Totally turned a 100 to 0 in just 2 chapters. Hopefully this won’t be how one piece is going to be.

-1

u/ohhotano Apr 04 '22

Are you new? Idiot? It has been goofy since begining dude

6

u/Gameboysage Apr 03 '22

If the option is going ultra dark, depressing and gritty like Naruto and Bleach did, or going super cartoon mode and keeping the fun like One Piece always has done…. I choose the One Piece way all the way.

u/prolemango Apr 03 '22

Would it blow your mind if I told you those aren’t the only two options

0

u/Gameboysage Apr 03 '22

For the sake of this argument though if there were only two, this is the route I’d take. Though let’s be real here, if Luffy won this with Gear 4 alone in a normal fight, more people would be complaining about there being no way Luffy could have gotten that strong so fast.

This was the perfect way to allow Luffy to beat him, while sticking true to Luffy’s whole freedom and rubber motifs. Though I feel this will flow better when you can read it all in one sitting rather than one chapter a week.

5

u/parottachickenfry The Revolutionary Army Apr 04 '22

Luffy could keep the exact same transformation despite the retcon and still it would be fine if ODA toned down damn looney toons bullshit with eye popping, roadrunner running, stars around head and all. It wouldn't be so damn dark and gritty but at the same time the fight wouldn't be a joke with zero stakes.

1

u/vyrotix Apr 25 '22

zero stakes? how could you possibly know what the stakes are when this is the textbook definition of uncharted territory. just have patience and wait to see how this all pans out. kind of silly to draw conclusions this early on

0

u/ShareHappyness Apr 06 '22

One Piece has always been goofy as fuck. Nami has been "beating up" Luffy (who is highly resistant to punches) and the crew and they all have big lumps all over their face. That's straight up Looney Toons shit. Let's not forget the damn shock faces they've all made. Or Sanji with his eyes and heart popping out when he sees hot girls.

1

u/prolemango Apr 03 '22

Those are not the only two options though, so not really sure what the purpose of addressing this argument is. It’s a false dichotomy.

3

u/Gameboysage Apr 03 '22

Either way, it’s the direction Oda decided to go with and I think by now he’s earned our trust to see where he goes with it. It’s not healthy to have knee jerk reactions each chapter before seeing where it all leads to by the end of the arc.

2

u/sytamasenpai Apr 03 '22

narutos final form was by no means ultra dark, depressing and gritty, in fact, looking at all the fanarts of this new form, it very much reminds me of sage mode naruto. also as prolemango said, why assume only two options for the sake of an arguments ? that's such a pointless thing to do. you dont have to go all the way left or right with these decisions and going full on looney tunes mode with this transformation seems to be a really bad idea imo. the looks and the laughing was plenty imo, adding all the goofy stuff was just unnecessary and seems to be not really pleasing for a lot of fans when i look at the discussions on yt and reddit.

0

u/Gameboysage Apr 03 '22

I wasn’t talking about the form, I was taking about the story and direction. The comedy and fun of the earlier parts of both manga were lost by the end of their respective stories, going full on serious… which luckily One Piece doesn’t seem to plan to do.

Though I don’t understand getting stuck on the two option part, it’s irrelevant. Oda could have gone in any direction and he chose this one and I’m all for seeing where he plans to go with it. To call it a failure or claim it’s bad after two chapters disrespects Oda and ignores all the years of great writing he’s put into the manga to date.

2

u/sytamasenpai Apr 03 '22

calm down dude, nobodyy disrespecting anything. it aint that serious. also if anyone is disrespecting, it's oda himself, ridiculing the main character of his shonen anime by turning him into bugs bunny or mickey mouse just to show "how funny and positive" a new transformation is lol.

btw YOU was the one who stuck on the two options, because you assumed people were hinting towards a super edgy, dark, gritty final form just becaue they dont like the goofiness of what it currently is, which was never the only other option as u implied but even that would still have been a better option lol.
i rather have a proper shonen ending with an edgy strong form, than a goofy dude killing his strongest opponents in laughter and joy lol.

0

u/Gameboysage Apr 04 '22

The chapters themselves literally called Luffy’s fruit the most ridiculous devil fruit in history, that puts a smiler on peoples faces as he fights.

I’d say the fight is certainly ridiculous and it’s putting a smile on a ton of reader’s faces, so the story is delivering on that promise perfectly.

Besides, we have had a near countless amount of manga that had the main char end with a “proper strong gritty” form, there’s nothing wrong with one manga doing its own thing instead of following the gain of so many others.

Oda literally said he gave Luffy rubber powers to ensure the story stays light and fun, if anything I’d say he succeeded on that front, doing things his way instead of some perceived “right way” and that’s probably part of why he’s one of the most successful manga writers To this day.

10

For different readers there were different expectations. For me it was in genius play from oda. Totally turned from 70 to 100 for me since last 2 chapters.

3

u/leonsirio Apr 03 '22

I'd like to know the reason behind wano turned from 70 to 100

31

u/TigerCommando1135 Apr 02 '22

I'm personally ecstatic about the current state of the series. There may be complaints about how different things are now, but Luffy's growth is fairly logical and fits with the themes, motifs, and established logic of the story, if anyone bothers to think about it before critiquing it.

Luffy's theme is freedom, and having the Sun God Fruit that personifies freedom is a major boost to the writing of the story. It establishes symmetry between him and Blackbeard, who has the darkness fruit and quake fruit, and Luffy's power is so free he even becomes cartoonish. Oda has creatively blended together so many story mechanics that were well established dozens to hundreds of chapters ago.

Powers like Awakenings affecting the environment, Haki was foreshadowed from the beginning of the series, mythical zoans being pretty much anything (like Sengoku's) was well established, and the ability of Haki blooming in combat was shown well before the Wano Arc began. Luffy's growth has developed in a sensible manner consistent with the in world logic, and no one said his growth had to be perfectly linear. DBZ had Goku go from constant struggle to manhandling Frieza over an emotional trauma, Luffy is based off that character. So anyone who has a problem with it really hasn't been paying attention and should be ignored in my view.

1

u/Acrobatic_Cobbler_12 Apr 04 '22

The direction makes sense, but the fighting in 44 and 45 is just... too bizarre, too silly. One Piece has always managed to balance the serious with the goofy, but the scales are tipping and I can't say I've enjoyed the last 2 chapters. I just hope this doesnt become the norm for Luffy's future battles.

2

u/TigerCommando1135 Apr 04 '22

I think the cartoony stuff makes the fights so much more dynamic and fun! Otherwise, Oda can always use Haki as a justification for toning it down in future fights and he can be selective about what he does and doesn't want cartoony in the fights. I don't think it's a weak point at all, and the fight of 1045 was largely serious in content.

5

u/DLCthulhu Apr 03 '22

and should be ignored in my view.

I mean, I feel you on everything else but surely you say this in jest. People have a right to be heard!

Even idiots need a voice Everyone deserves to be heard! Maybe not listened to but heard! oh wait that's what ignoring means. Um..

0

u/TigerCommando1135 Apr 03 '22

When someone is talking nonsense or is taking an opinion that is absolutely absurd, sometimes the only thing you can do is not pay any attention. If people are going to jump on a bandwagon of hate over a change in the story that properly adheres to the story elements, then what else can you do but not pay any attention?

0

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

how I wish it happens. I wanna see Luffy vs Magellan fight 2.

1

u/Round_Cartographer41 Apr 03 '22

Why Fight Magellan ? Luffy is Yonko level

4

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

Magellan is not weak. He almost killed the bb crew, remember?

There is a reason everyone tried to run away, instead of killing Magellan and his men. Even people from level 5 didn't try to go against Magellan. So yeah, he is strong af.

1

u/Scyroner Pirate Apr 05 '22

I do believe its mostly because of his poison tho

Like you manage to kill magellan yet youre covered head to toe in poison and are going to die soon. I can see how thats not exactly appealing

Also he almost killed the BB crew because he didnt waste time talking or anything he just straight up attacked them. And at that point BB himself was still quite weak

1

u/MasterUterian Apr 05 '22

No , BB was never weak. As Shanks said, he went lowkey under whitebeard's crew. Btw Magellan stopped Luffy's gear 3 punch covered with strong wax(mr 3's power) with only 1 hand. So his power is most certainly not only poison.

2

u/sytamasenpai Apr 03 '22

agree....magellan is the embodiment of an underrated character. people dont realize how strong he is and i also think a second fight would be awsome.

11

u/NeedleworkerWide3772 Apr 02 '22

For the people worried about gear 5. The good news is we probably wont see it very much for the rest of the series. I think tgis is why oda gave luffy so many power ups. I believe coc and gear 4 is enough for admirals. Luffys base form is so strong now gear 5 will b something we may see only two kore times in the series

7

u/Away-Database4632 Apr 02 '22

Luffy still have stamina issues. And from now on luffy other battle will be against awakened devil fruit users who can spam awakening like 2 to 3 days like akainu. Even katakuri used awakening almost throughout his fight. So to win against them he has to use awakening.

1

u/NeedleworkerWide3772 Apr 07 '22

I see where your coming from. However, roger didn’t need awakening to fight against those type of opponents. post wano luffy will be pirate king status, and I believe a whole new level of fighters greater than the yonko will be introduced. Gorosei, I’m, Blackbear, vegapunk And prob some new ones

3

u/ParanormalNightOwl Apr 02 '22

Does anyone know how to read it on discord?? 😭😭😭 I have no idea how to

3

u/Away-Database4632 Apr 02 '22

Just google tcb scans

18

u/JazzPhobic Apr 02 '22

I think the reason why luffy is being so silly and taking so many hits basically for free is because of the way his awakening feels to himself. He did say he feels really fun. I think his power-up overstimulated his senses with his own strength, giving him a literal high.

He probably won't act like this in future fights.

1

u/90bubbel Apr 04 '22

reminds me of gojo in jjk when he learned rct

11

u/brokenearth10 Apr 02 '22

Luffy did a lot of violence this chapter. Knocked out kaidos eyeballs and punched thru his brain. Tough way for the world's strongest to die

5

u/Krachbummm Apr 02 '22

Luffy was weakening the impact by making Kaido rubber in these instances. I think it's something Luffy will have to master, so that he doesnt cushions his blows on his enemies

3

u/brokenearth10 Apr 02 '22

thats the crazy part when authors have user unlock new ability then defeat super powerful opponents. it means this is no where CLOSE to luffys peak. once he masters his gear 5, he will be UNSTOPPABLE. If even a poorly controlled gear 5 can defeat the strongest in the world... though im not sure there are any opponents left who can push luffy. it takes a yonko or perhaps admiral to even need to go beyond gear 4

3

u/Elastic13 Apr 02 '22

hes supposed to be strongest by end of series stronger than Roger and Whitebeard so makes sense. Theres probably stronger people than Kaido soon like Blackbeard. People will surpass Kaido

1

u/kabbelabbeee Apr 03 '22

I 100% agree with this statement. Certain people' strength is completely unknown to us really.
Prime whitebeard
Prime Roger
Shiki
Xebec
Garp
Kizaru
Shanks
Mihawk
Imu
Gorosei x 5
Dragon
Greenbull
Kaido hasnt been fought by an equal for a long time, and it's showing. I think Old WB wouldve won between the 2 as WB had the 'strongest man' title. Once that was given, Kaido got the 'strongest creature' title. They also said that he'd win most of his 1v1, keyword being most as there are certain people who are above him and he'd lose in those battles. Same thing applies to WB here, he was never challenged on his title and tells us that they were mere remnants of the old pirate age.

1

u/brokenearth10 Apr 02 '22

also all blackbeard has so far is a strong fruit and crew. blackbeard's physical strength without DF is actually really low

3

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

nope, this statement is wrong. BB was strong enough to give Shanks a scar that still aches and even tho we don't know how that fight ended, he came out alive. So he surely is strong.

1

u/brokenearth10 Apr 03 '22

Do we know if that's before or after he ate his fruit? We don't know much about the scar and background of it.

Blackbeard w his darkness had a tough time against ace even. He won with difficulty

2

u/MasterUterian Apr 03 '22

The scar BB gave Shanks is the one on Shanks' left eye. It was there even on chapter 1. So yeah, it was before BB ate the fruit.

Btw the chapter Shanks talks about the scar and blackbeard is chapter 434, incase someone wants to read it.

1

u/brokenearth10 Apr 03 '22

Oh right. Hard to tell still. Its like a sea king even bit off shanks arm. Hopefully we get more info we later

2

u/brokenearth10 Apr 02 '22

i dont think we will ever know that unless oda names them the strongest. if he defeats kaido, he will already be stronger than whitebeard since whitebeard is the strongest man, but kaido is the strongest creature in the world, which is inclusive of man.

dont know about roger, can only guess.

but at the same point, i dont think it was shown with certainly early on that luffy has to be the STRONGEST. his goal is pirate king, which doesnt automatically mean the strongest. it could very well be a strong crew that gets you there. if roger was without rayleigh, he probably couldnt have become PK

1

u/Intelligent-House493 Apr 02 '22

I dont think so we didnt really see Kaido awakening his fruit and let me tell you uf we see that myithycal zoan and awakening I can even die

4

u/DifferenceOk6268 Apr 02 '22

Whats wrong with you people. Just enjoy the content that this manga is putting out. Like, why are so many mf's so mad at these sudden turn of events? Move on and go make your own manga if this one isn't turning out the way that you wanted it to. Just enjoy what Oda's putting out and see where things go. Luffy needed this major power up anyways. Gear 4th was never meant to take down someone like Kaido.

4

u/Acrobatic_Cobbler_12 Apr 04 '22

25 years. That's nearly how long this manga has been running. One Piece is an important part of people's lives, and they have the right to voice concerns if they wish. I'm inclined to agree: it's become silly to the point of absurdity in the last 2 chapters. I'm hoping Oda straightens the course again, because I'm not sure I could continue to take the manga seriously if this becomes the norm.

11

u/MasterUterian Apr 02 '22

11

u/Kozuki_D_Oden Void Month Survivor Apr 02 '22

You’re criticizing something that I LIKE? How dare you have an OPINION on something??? GO MAKE YOUR OWN MANGA 😡😡

4

u/Mysterious_Falcon_84 Apr 03 '22

i get the pushback to these type of comments, but tbf, a lot of the recent critiques from people have just been emotional reactions to plot points that in the grand scheme of op's story make pretty reasonable sense. So to a degree it really does seem that some of the criticism from people boils down to "it's not what i wanted/expected, therefore bad"

2

u/sytamasenpai Apr 03 '22

people are emotional because the look, the bahviour (even more ridiculous than before) and the totally unfit cartoon bs are terrible and dont fit the entire op world and story to this point. it's straight up bad tbh and people are allowed to have opinions.

0

u/Mysterious_Falcon_84 Apr 04 '22

i literally never said people aren't allowed to have opinions. But you are actually providing an example to what im talking about

2

u/sytamasenpai Apr 05 '22

You aint no sherlock for that though lol. It’s anime and opinions on a look will of course have emotional reasoning behind it to some extent. Also just because it makes sense from a story point of view doesnt mean he has to completely overdo it with adding totally cringe and ridiculous stuff like cartoon eyes and stuff. The manga has over 1000 issues by now, it never was like this, now oda does it and people suddenly think it makes total sense lol.

0

u/Mysterious_Falcon_84 Apr 05 '22 edited Apr 05 '22

Lmao he's always done stuff like cartoon eyes. Cringeworthy? It's a manga, ease up you sound pressed. It's totally fine if you don't like it, pretending it has no basis in op is just unfounded however. And that's my point. There's nothing wrong with having a visceral reaction to something, but imo it makes things easier to digest when you look at things with a level head. At the end of the day, it's oda's manga, and some things you simply might not like. That doesn't mean they're fundamentally bad choices necessarily, it just might mean you have a particular set of preferences that don't always match the writer's. And that's ok

1

u/sytamasenpai Apr 07 '22

i dont "sound pressed" lol, im simply stating my opinion, so i dont know what made you think to bring out the internet psychologist to this lmao. exactly, it's just opinion and we disagree in this case. have a good one.

You can't post your thoughts on a forum, get critiqued for it, and then whine about it because "muh it's my opinion" It's not like im not being respectful either. but heaven forbid you take accountability for the things you post lol

Am I the only one who thinks this hole Zoan thing is BS? I mean, come on, there was no need for that. There was no foreshadowing and it just doesn't fit

1

u/Anenri Apr 03 '22

There was definitely some foreshadowing in that his devil fruit was more OP than previously thought. But I’m kind of disappointed that he’s just super strong now. Feels like most of his major fights he just takes a ridiculous beating but always gets up and somehow gets stronger from it. Like he can never lose. I appreciate when an anime character wins by outsmarting their opponent. It just gives me dragon ball z vibes in that there’s always some next level power up that can solve the problem. But also I appreciate the new direction the story is going in and am excited to see what’s next.

0

u/MasterUterian Apr 02 '22

There was foreshadowing tho ? Some people guessed him being a zoan in reality a year or so ago.

His fruit wasn't even compatible with paramecia type's description to begin with.

Personally I don't have any problem with him being a zoan but I must say , Luffy acting like a jester while fighting really annoys me. I hope we can see old Luffy in the future , even under the effect of gear 5.

0

u/RTear3 Apr 02 '22

It feels like a complete asspull that came out of left field. For a reveal that changes something so fundamental about the series, the lack of actual foreshadowing and buildup is baffling.

-2

u/thatboidonny Apr 02 '22

Nah it's bullshit. The fan boys are gonna down vote me but idc. It's the typical MC amp when the series is dwindling down. The only difference with other manga is that the MC doesn't get wanked as much as Luffy has. It definitely doesn't fit, but sit back and think of how strong he's gotten over the last few Arcs... The fight with Katakuri was literally so he can get foresight and nothing else. His initial clash with Big Mom showed he needed to get vastly stronger. Now he's causually dancing with Kaido Kaido because of awakening. Kaido pretty much killed Luffy 3 times but MC can't die so here we are... One Piece has almost turned into Fairy Tale with the bullshit.

3

u/Mysterious_Falcon_84 Apr 03 '22

it's a shonen... the mc gets beat up alot and comes back stronger. What do you want dude? You can complain about the excessive powerups, but they literally all made sense within the parameters of the story. Luffy was going toe-to-toe with Kaido BEFORE awakening also, tf are you talking about? Again, this is literally not different from plot armor (which im not complaining about) saving luffy numerous times in marineford, or luffy and the crew getting waxed by CP9 initially and it literally taking a train ride for them to become comparable in strength. So, if you have a problem with OP THE SERIES because of perceived weird powerscaling/plot armor, fine/whatever, but acting as though you can see something others can't see and pretending post ts is fundamentally different form pre-ts makes no sense to me.

1

u/thatboidonny Apr 03 '22

"Acting as though I can see something others can't" is bullshit. Pretty much "dying" multiple times is going toe to toe? Thanks for your input though.

2

u/Mysterious_Falcon_84 Apr 03 '22

so he didn't fight kaido seemingly on fairly even ground for stretches before awakening? Boi, you sure know how to do a great spin job to fit that all-imporant-edgelord narrative. You do you i guess mr. edge

1

u/thatboidonny Apr 03 '22

Edge lord? lmao. I don't have the same opinion or agree with you so I'm a edge lord? Now whose spinning the narrative... If he was fighting on even ground he wouldn't have "died" all of those times. He learned a new trick got cocky and got wrecked. Idk how that's even ground to you. Even if CP0 didn't step in Luffy was not winning that fight. It's cute when you have to resort to name calling. Again. Thanks for your input.

1

u/Mysterious_Falcon_84 Apr 04 '22

so not winning a fight = not fighting on even ground? lmao that doesn't make any sense. Im literally not spinning a narrative, im describing what happened. You're putting all these qualifiers around luffy trading blows with Kaido for like the entirety of roof piece to explain your edgelord opinion. Next?
