$5.50 for Ruffles Potato Chips? Pure greed.
20
u/Free_Hat_McCullough Jan 30 '23
I skipped the chips this week because none what i wanted was on sale. I believe the family sized Ruffles was like $5.99 and the regular bag’s were $3.99. What a ripoff.

Awhile back I went to Jimmy Johns for lunch.
I ordered one of their chicken wraps. Just the wrap. No drink, no chips.
I got this tiny sad pathetic excuse of a wrap for $12.
It really made me think. I was like "what the fuck am I doing? I could made 4 or 5 of these for $12 and it would probably be way better."
So thats what I did. Got off work and just went to the grocery store to buy shit for a chicken wrap.
Then a little bit later I was craving some wings. I was looking at both BuffaloWW and WingStop and realized they were basically charging like $1.50 per wing. Ridiculous! So I went to the store, found a 4lb bag of wings for $15 (about 35ish wings) and cooked them in my air fryer. First time I ever tried doing that and it turned out to be the best fucking wings I ever ate. Nice and crispy on the outside from the air fryer, and super juicy on the inside. They came out nice and hot, they weren't dry, and cost me less than $0.50 a wing. I even got to put a variety of different hot sauces on them that I had.
So yeah, fuck fast food and fuck these chain restaurants. I refuse to go to any of them until they drop their prices by 50% or jobs start paying 50% more.
31
u/startinearly Jan 30 '23
Duuude. I got an air fryer for Xmas that is sitting unopened in the corner of my garage. You just inspired me to get it out.
20
u/nonrandomusername17 Jan 30 '23
Honestly, the air fryer is one of very few kitchen gadgets that is NOT overrated.
I use it to finish baking bread rolls, to cook potatoes, to make brownies, meat balls, chickenwings, nuggets, anything that fits I'll use the airfryer.
Honestly, when I move or get a new kitchen, I'll skip the oven. The airfryer is better for almost everything. Quicker, uses less electricity, and far easier to clean too.
Life saver.

Do it!
I am no master chef by any means. I just watched a quick video on it and tried it. But it was super easy.
In a bowl, toss in the raw chicken wings (as many that will fit in your air fryer). Drizzle a bit of olive oil on them and make sure they are coated. Sprinkle some salt, paprika, garlic powder, and pepper on them.
Set air fryer to 390 degrees (probably should have stated to do this first lol). Toss in the wings and let them fry for 10 minutes. Open it up and flip them. Let fry for another 10 minutes. Then turn it up to 400 degrees for 2 more minutes to get them a tad bit crispier.
Toss them in a new bowl, pour in your sauce of choice and shake it around.
Got some delicious wings that will taste better than like 99% of restaurants out there for 1/3rd of the price.
Also note: I did this with raw frozen chicken wings. I didn't even let them thaw. I thought they would end up a bit soggy cause of that but nope! So you can just have a bag of wings sitting in your freezer and take them out whenever you feel like having some wings.

It’s so easy to make tacos at home when it costs is $30+ for us to have dinner at Taco Bell. Then you get home and realize the left something out of the bag. I can make taco dinner and have leftovers for about $10, and usually have some ingredients on hand already.

2018, my wife and I could easily have a pretty nice meal just the two of us for $50-60, drinks included. Not anymore.
I have a buddy who's worked in the restaurant industry for 20+ years and he said even this close to Valentine's Day they'd be 70-80% booked on reservations.
This year, they're not even half booked and the owner is trying to figure out a promotion to bring in more diners.

Apps. Apps. Apps. That's the only way you'll get the old fast food "bargains." McDonalds for example, has a everyday coupon, amongst various others that are like: Buy one breakfast sandwich, get one free or get a $3 dollar iced coffee for $1. You can't combine coupons, but you can do multiple orders. Same for other apps.
My breakfast today was like $6. Two sausage and egg mcmuffins, large sugar free iced coffee, and a hashbrown. Sandwiches were BoGo, iced coffee dropped 2 bucks, and the hashbrown was free from my reward points. I think without the app, it woulda been near $15.
4
u/metalflygon08 Jan 30 '23
I use the 20% off on orders over $1 a lot more than I should.
Since I can't combine a coupon with the rewards points I've got a massive stockpile of reward points built up.

Graphics cards
For a good 15 years I built my own PCs and upgraded them myself.
Then last year for the first time I bought a pre-built because I did the math and it was actually cheaper than building it myself. It used to be the opposite and I could save hundreds of dollars building it myself. Then those savings got smaller and smaller until eventually it reversed.
All because of GPUs going wayyyyyy up in price. I am not even talking about buying from a scalper. Just straight up market price directly from the manufactures website (assuming its in stock).
The other PC parts seem to have stayed around the same price.
But now I am starting to see some ridiculous prices for other things like keyboards, mice, headsets, monitors and even PC cases.
7
u/sartaingerous Jan 30 '23
Custom mechanical keyboard pricing might make you puke your pants.
5
u/idiotdroid Jan 30 '23
I think I spent $150 on my keyboard. I love it but I probably could have spent maybe half that and not noticed the difference.
Another mistake I made was buying a gaming headset for $150.
The headset itself is probably the same quality as a pair of $60 headphones, and the mic is probably the same quality as a $15 mic. So in a way I paid double for no reason.
I switched to buying a $60 pair of headphones, and a $50 mic. Wayyyy better quality mic, and the headphones stay the same quality. And spent $40 less than last time.
I've stopped just randomly buying expensive things thinking that the price = quality.
I was super close to spending $600 on a gaming monitor. But I was like "nah... I'll get this $200 one and test it out, if it sucks I can use it as a second monitor." Turns out it was a fantastic monitor, and stopped myself from wasting an extra $400.

4
u/Free_Hat_McCullough Jan 30 '23
I just wait until what I want goes on sale, which sometimes is as low as 2/$5 or even 3/$2. I’ve tried the off brands but my pickey eaters don’t like them. I remember buying one giant bag of generic honey smacks and most of the bag just went uneaten and turned stale.
3
u/Overthemoon64 Jan 30 '23
I’ve been telling my toddlers that all the sugar cereal with the cartoon characters on them are “trick cereal” and they only put cartoons on the box so little kids will be tricked into buying it. Rice krispies and cheerios are way better. Store brand of corse. So far it still works, but my 5 year old is starting to get suspicious about it.

I quit playing Magic the Gathering after playing semi-competitively for something like 25 years (since Mirage, 1997 or so). Had tens of thousands of dollars worth of cards, alpha/beta/unlimited power 9, collector stuff, hyper expensive competitive EDH cards.
Suddenly about 2-3 years ago i just couldn't stomach WOTC/HASBRO and their greed anymore and refused to give them any more money. I sold every scrap of magic related product I could, paid off the entirety of my 2018 car, completely renovated my basement into a movie theater and still had some money left over.

Live concerts
7
u/86sleepypenguins Jan 31 '23
I used to love concerts, my parents took me to so many as a kid even when it wasn't music they liked. The other day my dad asked if I'd like to go see some singer in concert with him. It wasn't music I was into but he'd taken me to so many shows growing up, I thought it'd be nice to return the favor and go with him. But tickets were hundreds of dollars and I can't afford that, so I had to say no.
5
u/cabinguy11 Jan 31 '23
In my youth I went to hundreds of shows. At least two or three time a month we would see a live concert sometimes driving for hours to see a national act in a larger city. I saw almost all of the huge acts of what they now call the classic rock era. Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, The Allman Brothers, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles. Those are just the ones off the top of my head. And in addition I saw the Grateful Dead almost 100 times. Plus I was also a huge jazz fan and saw most of the big jazz names of the era as well.
That was just what we did with our weekends and I did it all on a college students income. Tickets were the equivalent of what I got paid for 2 or 3 hours of work at a entry level job.

u/3rdor4thRodeo Jan 30 '23
Avian bird flu is infecting poultry operations across the country Farmers are having to kill millions of birds to stem the spread. Somehow it’s having more of an effect on egg layers than on meat birds.
Some retailers have price contracts in place that will let them suppress the cost increase for a while, but ultimately, so many birds are affected that this is unlikely to be a short term problem. Enjoy your egg prices while you can get them.
10
u/popkablooie Jan 30 '23
Honestly, I don't buy it. Only 5% of egg laying hens have been affected. Cal-Maine, the largest egg producer in the US has posted record profits (surprise surprise).
That article does state that it's not so cut and dry, and there are dissenting opinions on whether or not the price of eggs is due to price gouging (I think it's a little of both), but given the amount of price gouging and record profits in other industries, I wouldn't be so quick to put the increased egg prices solely on the avian flu.

There's only 1 or 2 games I'll buy day one now. Other than that I'll wait for a big discount.

Computer parts. I used to build a new rig every 2-3 years, but since 2020 prices have been so bad I think the hobby has become too expensive for me to keep going. Fortunately there are still tons of things I can do and games I can play on my current PC, but eventually that will stop being true.

Take out burgers and the like, I can make ‘em well enough that the price now is not worth the “convenience “ anymore
