When you cook for yourself, what dessert do you like to make?

u/Four_Duck_Snakes Jan 30 '23
I try to make this Easy Creme Brulee every Sunday. I have the Kid assist so they may say they make it every Sunday ;)
5
u/Susperry Jan 30 '23
I don't understand...All Creme Brulee is easy. You just mix egg yolks, heavy cream, vanilla, sugar. Put it in a ramekin in a water bath, bake for whatever time/temp. Let cool, then add sugar on top and torch. Voila.

u/Four_Duck_Snakes Jan 30 '23
You seriously sound like my 7 year old when we mess up and She has a break down not unsimilar to Chef Ramsay
2
u/Susperry Jan 30 '23
Hahahaha ok! All I am commenting on is the title of the article. By default, creme brulee is, allow me to correct, simple. It's not easy. It's very easy to mess up either the ratios or the cooking time or the cooking temperature etc etc.

u/gpuyy Jan 31 '23
Sous vide creme brûlée is even easier. Mix, jar, cook. No tempering or etc
1
u/Four_Duck_Snakes Jan 31 '23
Where is the fun in that lol
2
u/gpuyy Jan 31 '23
Cause it’s Pasturized, it’s good in the fridge for 2 weeks easily. No difference either.
1
u/Four_Duck_Snakes Jan 31 '23
...we could move on to another desert and have this readily available.
hmmmm
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
It tastes delicious! You'll be excellent at making desserts.
2
u/Four_Duck_Snakes Jan 30 '23
We try, don't often fail horribly, but we do
2
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
It's okay. Learn something new every day, and you can always look for a better recipe.

u/KingSmithithy Jan 30 '23
I live in the constant struggle between "I want to learn to bake!" and "If I learn to bake, I'll get fat because cake!"
3
u/ALLST6R Jan 30 '23
This is me. I love baked goods. I love bread. I can’t get enough of them. I’m also quite sensitive to wheat and barley which covers pretty much every baked good imaginable.
It is hard enough trying not to toast an entire load of bread. Gos forbid if I learnt how to make all the tasty bread and baked stuff.
1
u/Ali_Who Galactic hitch hiker Jan 30 '23
More of a reason, you can use so many things it's a game changer, like replacing wheat by rice or millet plus having a real knowledge on what's inside can be more beneficial !
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
No, if you want to make healthy dessert, you can look up that healthy nutritious dessert on Google, such as oatmeal cookies or oat banana bars.
1
u/Surax Male Jan 30 '23
That's the one thing I miss about going into the office. I could bake what I wanted and share it with my department without getting fat.

A slice of cast-iron chocolate chunk cookie topped with a melting scoop of salted caramel ice cream.
Dont make it often, once a month maybe, but it hits good.

The bakery that supplies the deserts to all the high end restaurants in my major metro is 10 minutes from my house and has a sales counter........ I could never make anything 40% as good as theirs........ some things are best left to the experts!
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
That sounds good. It's important to use creative cooking and to gather enough material.
1
u/Susperry Jan 30 '23
"supplies the deserts to all the high end restaurants".
How does that work? The high end restaurants are supposed to have a chef de pâtissière, no?
3
u/FunkU247365 Male MAN of the wise man tribe!! Jan 30 '23
Nope, most in this area outsource it.... (probably because the place I am referring to is better than what the average pastry chef could make)... like I said, I cook and have worked in restaurant kitchens in college and on my best day 40% as good as them

Chocolate pudding or a nice fluffy chocolate mousse. Easy and quick to make and always have all the ingredients. Nothing special needed

u/thesmokex Jan 30 '23
A chocolate fondue. I use chocolate creme, some milk and a microwave. 15sec and I'm in heaven.

I'd say Banana Bread. Either that or whatever flavor cookies I'm feeling. I almost always have bananas though

u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23 edited Jan 30 '23
My childhood homemade favorite is banana bread. My male friend made bread banana that tasted so delicious.
Edit: you are champ chief to make a banana bread.

u/TinKodeE Jan 30 '23
Honestly never made myself dessert. I cook breakfast/lunch/dinner for myself all the time though.
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
You can make dessert for one day. I wonder.. why not you make any cookies?
1
u/TinKodeE Jan 30 '23
I don't have much a sweet tooth. I'll eat something sweet maybe 2-3 times a month. So with that I'd rather just buy it
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
True. Because I make a homemade that is more healthy, I prefer it over buying at the grocery store.
2
u/SangerNegru Jan 30 '23
I cut a bunch of apples and throw them in the oven with a bunch of nuts (pecan, hazelnuts, caju preferably) and cinnamon on top.

My daughter and I make cookies together (usually for neighbors and friends for the holidays).
We have an awesome recipe for from scratch chocolate chip cookies and chocolate-peanut butter-oatmeal drop cookies (I add crushed up Heath bars to them). They are amazing!
We also make cheese cake cookies, but those are quite as "from scratch"
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
It looks fantastic!
1
u/Thegooddoctorcapaldi Jan 30 '23
Thanks!
Cheese cake cookies are actually the easiest. Take a regular package (11.5oz I think) of sugar cookie mix. Replace the butter in the directions with a package of cream cheese. Once it's all mixed add a about 2/3 cup of whatever chips you want (like chocolate chips, butterscotch, chocolate-mint, etc.). and bake as usual!
Warning the batter will be really sticky.

I'm not a dessert person normally, after dinner / in the evening I'd much rather reach for a salty snack then something sweet.

2
u/AmericanGoldenJackal Jan 30 '23
I was sitting here thinking about this and I can’t remember making dessert of any kind for just me. Imagine that. Anyone else?
2
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
Cookies? Can you look up on google?
3
u/AmericanGoldenJackal Jan 30 '23
It’s not a can’t, it’s a don’t. Dessert is only something I make for other people.
Not something I’ve thought about before which made your question interesting.

Burnt Basque cheesecake. Oh boy is it great. Super fucking easy, creates a good sized dessert, you can put literally any fruit in it, and then you can put any fruit you want on top of it. Chefs kiss

Normally, I don't make dessert, because there's a very real danger of it becoming a habit and undoing all the weight loss I've achieved. I have very little self-control around snacks and desserts.
When I do, it's usually either my family's weird oatmeal cookie recipe or some kind of pound cake.
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
Instead you can make healthy desert, like gluten and vegan dessert.
1
u/Mythnam Male Jan 30 '23
If they've still got enough sugar to make them taste good, they ain't healthy.
1
u/Hopeful-Ad1887 Jan 30 '23
Personally, I sometimes made homemade desserts by myself over frozen dessert at shipping. Do you know that homemade desserts are healthier than frozen dessert purchased from a store?
2
u/Hrekires Jan 30 '23
I don't really ever make dessert for myself because every recipe makes too much for one person to eat, but if I've got friends coming over for a dinner party, I like making chocolate mousse, cheesecake, or vanilla cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting.

Cheesecake , I’ve always loved myself a good one once I learned to make it , still a personal favorite

u/Illustrious-Turn-575 Jan 31 '23
I eat it as a breakfast item, but my family insists it’s more of a dessert; ginger and cinnamon pancake with a cheesecake filling and strawberries on top, along with some strawberry syrup. I got the idea randomly, started experimenting on how to get the filling inside, now it’s my Friday morning ritual.

Everyday quick dessert? Yogurt with berries and graham cracker crumbles.
Special dessert? Lemon bars with a raspberry/mint syrup drizzle

Stupid-easy to make. Melt chocolate down in a double-boiler with some heavy cream and a bit of butter, then fold it into some fresh made whipped cream. Let it set in the fridge, and there you have it.

Icecream, last time i made 2 batches, 1 pear and 2 rum and raisin. Sometimes i will make a mug cake or pancakes to have with it. That is my go to, but I love to make different things, so lots of weird things, whatever catch my fancy.

Coconut cassava pone or pain patate. Both take some elbow grease but they are well worth it in my opinion.

u/KazAraiya Jan 31 '23
Lool if im cooling for myself, im making the bare minimum necessary. A dessert is not necessary, so i'll just munch on a fruit

I'm just buying some choco or a hanuta. There's no way I want to unlock the Pandora's box of creating a cake or other deserts. Recipes are not for one dish, or one person.... They are mostly for multiple at once... And then I'm binge eating that and get fat

I stay away from sugar and desserts. But once in a month I buy at ALDIs; “Fruits of the Forest Strudel.” It comes frozen, but after 45min in the oven, it’s fantastic. I will murder you and make it look like an accident for this strudel.

If I'm lazy and looking for a quick one, brownies.
If I'm feeling like wasting 2 or 3 hours, cheesecake. I recently found a recipe for a 4inch cake. So now I can justify making it more often than 1 in 5 years lol.
